I think in my head.
Do you think in words?
Words flash through my mind as I play chess, but I sincerely wish that I could project starker images when imagining multiple captures on key squares and other long tactical sequences.
I picture the pieces moving around, which is not how great blindfold players like Pillsbury and Alekhine played blindfold according to what I've read. And obviously PCs don't visualize either when they're playing chess, so maybe I'm outta the loop here (as usual). Even when I'm looking for stuff like open files, weak squares, backward pawns etc I don't "talk out loud" to myself about these concepts although I suppose you could say I think in words when I count how many pieces and pawns are on the board.
Do you think in words when you're thinking in chess? Or do use picture thinking or both? Which method do you find to be the most effective in improving your playing performance, thinking words or in picture?
