It's fine to say gg when you lose. Don't say it when you win, that's bragging. If your opponent says gg (win or lose) you should say it too to avoid giving the impression that you thought it wasn't a good game. After playing a bunch of games when you decide to call it quits, it's polite to say "ggs."
In pro gaming (esp. starcraft and starcraft II) the loser almost always says "gg" and if he doesn't say it, that's bad sportsmanship.
In Russian Roulette the winner always says gg (good gun).

users can say and do whatever they want to and everyone has an opinion on everything, killaninja is "just saying". Who knows whether kn actually says hello himself to opponents to establish rapport or does kn actually do to others what he writing about, who knows...for me i always type gg win or lose, how opponent takes it is up to them.

Nobody is takes losing harder than chess players. It's rough. Thats why we always strive to get better. The makers of this game torture us everyday as it is. I am never attempting to rub it in anothers face when I type gg. It's only when I feel like the game is worth reviewing, especially during positional battles. I won't tyoe it if it is a blunder that loses the game. Even if I lose it is sometimes worth it knowing that the other player had to work really hard for a win.
