Live Chess Freezing Causes Me To Lose Game!

Sort:

I was attempting to play a live chess match this evening, and after a few moves of the Phillidor, I attempted to move, but was unable to. I tried clicking, dragging, even connecting a mouse to my laptop, but nothing worked. I was forced to resign after a full minute of trying to move, as to not time out and be accused of "Violating the Fair Play Policy" which would hamper attempts to "Keep The Site Fair And Fun For Everyone".

I have noticed many bugs in Live Chess recently. Is this related to the recent server problems, upcoming V3, or something of that nature? Staff input will be apppreciated. Until I get a definitive answer, I will not play any more Live games, as there is the risk of being unfairly forced to resign.

You may need to copy + paste the above link, as the hyperlink only takes one to the generic Live Chess homepage.

Try playing an unrated match now to see if the problem persists. Also, the bar that is next to each player's username indicates the connection strength, but that probably would not be the issue since you were able to resign. I would suggest refreshing the page if it happens again.

Also, the staff in the "Help and Support" chatroom are likely to respond.

I used CTRL + R/ F5/ CMD + R, and it did not help.

TsetseRoar

I frequently have the same problem irrespective of connection strength. Live chess is basically unplayable for me.

That's not new

- -when I am playing it seems to only freeze when I get into a dominant position - and so just like you can google computer game short cuts - well the paranoid me wonders if a super computer chess.com elite found a way to freeze the opponents computer

camberfoil

I think one would meet the same fate as oxoxvc did...banned at his prime...RIP

LOL, I just had it freeze at the exact point I played the winning move -- I even got a message that my rating had increased. But alas, no. So here's what it currently says in my chat window:

GAME OVER
 - hawkon vs. TsetseRoar - TsetseRoar won by checkmate (+9). Your new blitz rating is 1496.
NEW GAME (971245322) - piromat vs. TsetseRoar (5 0 rated) (win: 8, draw: 0, loss: -8)
GAME OVER - piromat vs. TsetseRoar - TsetseRoar won by checkmate (+8). Your new blitz rating is 1495.

What happens to me is I'll make a move and sit there waiting for my opponent to move.  Then after three or four minutes I'm told I lost connection and it's trying to reconnect, after reconnection it turns out I never registered my move.  Sometimes it automatically makes me resign.

I've lost games do to time running out or been "automatically" resigned in this way many times.  It's very difficult for me to play live chess.  Very buggy.

I'd guess, and this is just a 'guess', that yall are all using Internet Explorer?  Highly unrecommended browser.

erik

can you tell me your browser and operating system? how new/old is your machine? were you running a lot of other programs in the background? more details please! :D

camberfoil

@erik I was using Safari with Mac OS X 10.10, with no other programs running. My computer is only a year old, so age of the machine and operating system should not have had anything to do with it. I have played a few unrated games since (not rated, just in case) and the problem has not persisted. It might have been just a solitary glitch, like the time when one of my Black pawns was on White's c2 square upon setup and I could not move it :D

ok. strange. i have to say, with the amount of complexity in both computers, servers, internet connections, javascript, and everything in between, sometimes it feels like a miracle to me that it works at ALL!

My Browser is Internet Explorer, Windows 7, I was not running any other programmes and it has now happened on my new superduper i5 8GB RAM laptop, at least that is what they said at the shop lol.

I do not like windows 8 , so I chose win 7. It is a week old, but only used in the last few days.

I highly recommend Firefox, Chrome, or Safari.

camberfoil

Okay. Thank you very much for your input. The problem has not recurred, I just wanted to let you guys know 😃

Interesting...I faced a similar problem on my iPad. I had to log out and log back in for the board to finally start responding. almost lost on time (quite an achievement for a slow chess game)

camberfoil

Was it on the app or the site?

As a web developer, I would normally also recommend Chrome or Firefox (not Safari anymore, unfortunately) but I have been experiencing a bug in Chrome for some time where I get logged out of the site anytime I click on a game or a forum. It does not happen in FF or IE.
