Shouldn't I have won?

I am a beginner and I played against a beginner who had a queen and a king against my king in the endgame. However, he or she couldn't really mate me (might be a little difficult for beginners) so I went around with the king as fast as I could because (s)he had very little time left so fast moves were necessary. Eventually, there was no time left. So I won on time! However, it said that there was insufficient material and that the game was a draw. Is thisn really correct according to the rules of the game?

It is common in online games that you cannot be awarded a win on time if you have insufficient material to have won otherwise.  You'll find that built into a lot of online chess sites.

See for example the FIDE rules (link here) art. 6.9 in fine. It's a draw.
