Swear blocking and swear filter exsessive?

The idea of filtering swear words is valid but what's the point in blocking people from chat for swearing twice in quick succession?

I was playing someone today and we were briefly chatting. Eventually i blundered so i ended up swearing, but it was all friendly etc i wasn't swearing at him, i just said something, like "oh sh*t, that was a bad move". Then we agreed a rematch, so i said, i'll have to kick your ass this time to recoup some points.

Forgetting ass is a swear word i then get blocked for an hour.

I mean, either have the swear filter or block people for an hour or whatever for swearing, but surely having both is just ridiculous. You're essentially blocking people for attempting to do the impossible.

By "do the impossible", you mean not swear?

Me, too.  This poster needs to implement a "swear jar" imo.  Perhaps the money collected at even a quarter a word, could be used to go on a cruise later this year.

The filter is imperfect and overlooks swear words, so it's reasonable to assume there's more swearing going on than the filter detects.

I think it is a good site design to combine a filter to detect along with a 'time out' for those with a potty mouth, so that their opponents can get some relief and the offenders are 'inconvenienced' enough to become motivated to pay more attention to what they say.

You guys haven't read what i wrote.

You cannot physically swear because it blocks you from doing so. So why ban you as well?

Makes zero sense.

You're right, your post does make zero sense.

It's done for 'good measure' (a pinch of redundancy).  As because while the site will catch some swear words, it won't catch all of them (and it's a reasonable assumption you're  a poor speller [sorry, if that makes me sound swearist, but I truly believe that those who are ignorant enough to swear are probably ignorant of proper spelling of many swear words], so some swear words are probably slipping past the site).

It does make you sound "swearest".

Swearing, used properly (and espcially sparingly), is a powerful linguistic tool.

Ah ha!  Like the OP, you have trouble spelling words correctly.  So, I surmise you too, are being caught out by the site when you try to swear.  Correct?

Yes, my misspelling a couple words is an indication that I'm a potty-mouth.

Do not swear,

My grand daughter plays chess here, why should she have to deal with swear words ? Always remember, one day you will grow up, but you can be immature all your life.

Best regards,

if she goes to any kind of school with other children in it, the swearing there is much worse and much more frequent then here.

I think it is cute how we like to shield our "innocent" children from the utterly pervasive.

I once got warned for writing the phrase, "couldn't finish it."

Can you see why?

...finish it."

Seriously?!

I agree. Why go to the trouble of writing code, and putting into place all that robotic programming to block the appearance of bad words, and then still ban you anyway? It should let the guy write what ever the H he wants to. If he gets his rocks off on cussing, let him wallow in it. Just don't show what he writes to the other people.

What's so kcufing hard about that?

TheGrobe
I've suggested previously that every user get their own banned word list that defaults to the same list that's used now. No-one would ever get kicked for using a word that was on someone else's banned word list, but if a comment had a word that was on my list, it would be obscured from view for me.

How many truck drivers do we have on this site, anyway?

Can you imagine being the guy who has to keyboard each objectionable word into the list?  What a way to spend the day.
