I recently finished a blitz game against a much higher opponent.Well its tough to tell with the new rankings.Anyway i had him beaten,in check, with mate to come.I'll give him credit for being a quick typist,as he used his remaining 30 sec's or so to type....

Loser boy

1200 low ranked loser boy

I thought it pretty funny, didn't upset me at all, probably a kid.So i typed ass as a reply & hit send. This opened a box from chess.com."You have been warned by Admin,You will be kicked off or banned".

Whats up with that? He can taunt me,but i cannot respond? Did 'ass' suddenly become a taboo word and i wasn't informed?

ooda_loop

There's a profanity filter which automatically warns when you swear. Obviously the word you used is on the list while none of the words he used are.

kohai

In live chess 1 only the main chatroom was auto mod filtered for abusive language.

Iin live 2, the game chat is aswell.

Yeah, it's better just to ignore people like that imo :) Man if you think chess is bad you should try poker! There's money involved so some of the tirades people come out with when they get bad beat out of their dollars are quite astounding! I used to let it bother me and it affected my play. Now I just smile and ignore them - pity them - or mute them.

When did ass become abusive language Kohai? I'm sure if it was blocked, then you can look it up and see that that was all i typed in the box.

EternalChess

Loser isnt an offensive language?

I wanna commit suicide when people call me loser :(

i get bullied everyday and everyday i hear loser 50 times in the hall!

This should be offensive!

I should take my money elsewhere.. like a site for kids :'(

Might have been better to just report the abuse by your opponent.

Because that chess.com popup you described was instantaneous, I'll bet they have some software filters in place and arse was in the no-no dictionary.

So Mr. Taunt was successful because you got the warning, not him.

I guess you're right Schachgeek.Maybe i should "ass" chess.com for a list of acceptable words to use in live chat:)

They have to draw a line somewhere and they chose to draw it above ass.

I think that word can actually be quite obscene or profane when attached to -hole or stupid damn- etc . It certianly doesn't offend me but plenty of people do find it offensive.

KINGxSavaman

When people call you a loser and you lose, then thats poor sportsmanship but in your case, the reason why it's offensive to you is because you take it to the heart. You should never let a person you don't know call you a loser and mess up your life. If thats the case then you need serious counseling.

When they mean offensive language means words that are known as cussing words or sexual harrassment. Loser is a word used for teasing and teasing don't have to be taken down as hard.

kohai

There is no need for anyone to be using any kind of bad language on live chess games or main chatroom at all either on the old version or on this new version :)

Meclydagh, in Ireland Ass usually means Donkey or fool, in the US, it means @rse, I'm surprised you haven't found that out yet.  You in a monastery :-) ?

DanielleSurferGirl

If your opponent acts like an idiot, block them so they won't be able to play you again. If they curse or use obscene language then report them & most likely will be banned. Never lower yourself to their level, you are much more intelligent for that. The best thing for everyone as far as language goes is...this is a family friendly site, so talk here as if you were speaking to your parents, grandparents, church members, etc.

Anacletus_Ignis

I dislike the iron-wall censorship.

I'm not one to cuss others out, but I feel I should have the option to use any word language proffers.

If this were Sesame Street's site, I might feel differently.

Anacletus_Ignis

Language, like chemicals, firearms, et cetera, cannot be inherently "bad" or "evil".

They are essentially tools and can only be used badly.

So, people should say, "no bad use of language", and not "no bad language".

As for church members—Preachers (sky pilots) say "hell" and "damned" constantly, however contextually they are being used "well".

Should you ban them, where would Christianity be?

Use your intelligence for something besides nannying everyone else.

Slammy

I dislike the lack of decorum in what is the classic game of respect and intelligence. This shouldn't be a debate about language, it should be about respecting your opponent and being able to handle losing, and winning.

As with all things in life, some people just have a hard time losing.  Thank him for the game, and move on, and if needed block them.

Anacletus_Ignis

Yes, but if you were a Christian and wanted to witness to your opponent, most respectfully, you could not say they were damned or going to hell...  ( ^_^ )

I'm sure there are other cases-in-point where cursing respectively would be a neccesity in Chess...

That's a great link Schachgeek!

George Carlin had quite of few messages of great importance to the human race.  I disagree with him on God, agree with him on most everthing else.  Awesome that he is included in this wiki article.

Amen!  I love George Carlin.  And as you stated, except for the God apsect of his routines he was dead on on everything else.  The man was very intelligent, and did nothing but create routines about how "ingorant", and what creatures of habit we are as a people.

Anacletus_Ignis

I would like to give an example of where in a game I was constantly abused verbally by an obvious youth of illegitimacy.  I did not block him, or report him.  I responded to his long string of abuses thusly:

"Anklebiter of aspermatism, thee would do well, were this trying hinged upon puerile logorrhea."

I then disabled chat.  After the game he sent me a Medieval Challenge Trophy which states:

I challenge you to a medieval duel. Pull the sword out of the stone to accept.

Under it he wrote:

"Thee would do well if he acted like he was living in his own time, haha."  (trust me, this was the absolute nicest thing he had typed)

I gave him back a "Shakespeare Trophy" which states:

There were some great plays in that game.

Under it I wrote:

"Hold, sirrah: Methinks not by thee, though by me."

Sirrah being a contemptuous form of address—yes, quite funny, I did think so...

So my point with this is, do not get your panties bunched when someone says something to you.  Do not run and tattle.  Combat them with your inborn wit.

Methinkst I did him well, as well as diffusing angst by digression.

By the way, I mated him in 12 moves.  It's quite entertaining:
