That's ususally the first question I ask myself after I lose ;-)
Why do you play Chess?
I play chess because 1) I like the competition 2) I like studying the game and applying new skills 3) I think it's a beautiful game.

I tried scating, rugby, deepseadiving, motoring, benjie, paragliding,.. But all of that is dull. Happy to have discovered chess!

i play CHESS because i love it i first learned chess when i was about 5 or 6 i have loved it yet its fun to play you wanna play???

I play chess because my girlfriend has very little time for me. It is funny to look at my tactics trainer graph. There is almost no activity in the months she was available and other times when I am lucky to see her once a week I have tons of attempts.
Cute...Mind she is not a computer geek. Lol.
lol, mine isn't either. A young hottie and I have no clue how I got her. Well maybe a little clue. ;-) She doesn't play chess. She plays people.

Ms. Day
Do you crave the Islands of Hawaii ?
I know I do...went there for vacation last November...paradise...way better than I expected.

Combination of the following arguments:
It is one of the few games which is known by many people. Easy to learn, hard to master. It is cheap and mobile. One versus one: no xv1 situations; not dependent on team player's performance. No luck involved (like throwing dices). No unknown information (like cards in poker). Not solved (like draughts/checkers). No physical activities involved, only mind. What do you mean not physical? I sweat when I play chess.
You do??? ewwwwwwww lol
Yes, lol but I also muti-task while playing!
@indian 1960: it is true that not all chess players are intelligent, and that not all intelligent people are chess players. However, you do realize that mutually exclusive means that it is impossible for both things to occur at the same time, right? Well, you probably don't. Anyways, it isn't mutually exclusive because there are chess players who do happen to be intelligent. I think what you are trying to say is that they are not too related.
Personally, I choose to play chess because I find it to be a fun way to spend free time. After I go buy a video game (after scoring well on my tests) I'll probably take a short break from this site.

take you, e.g.....you are not a chess player (you're a wood pushing patzer) but you come across as having intelligence. although, you haven't learned to think outside yet - you're still gripping to what other philosophes have said...and you're going "yeah i get it". and intelligent people don't waste time "playing" chess - unless they have addiction genes. THINK - with purpose. and although chess and intelligence are probably not mutually exclusive, they are close to not being able to exist at the same time.

take you, e.g.....you are not a chess player (you're a wood pushing patzer fondling pieces) but you come across as having an assemblance of intelligence. altho, you haven't learned to think outside yet - you're still gripping to what other philosophes have said...and you're going "yeah i get it". and intelligent people don't waste time "playing" chess - unless they have addiction genes. kinda like where you're headed thumbing video games and not reading between your prof's words. RE: it's a box you're fighting desperately to get out of ! THINK - with purpose. and altho chess and intelligence are probably not mutually exclusive, they are extraordinarily close to not being able to exist at the same time.
You sound like you need a therapist. Chill out.

meloncoly -
your duty is to break outta the bourgieous class by schooling. and don't start fantasizing by reading about how someone like steve jobs became rich and famous. remember, there's no dignity in the lower class - that's why they're paying for your college.
and re: if you were a "chess player", you'd (and others) would know it imm. view yourself down at the chinese restaurant looking at a tilapia sideways gasping for for it's last breath. it's actually a mirror - it's you ! (as a so called chessplayer) you're a fish with tartared chips and a splash of malt vinegar (gawd that makes me hungry).
