This is a famous puzzle. I saw it years ago and totally forgot about it and the solution. It took me a long time to find the one and only mate.

 

Part of the problem is that the board coordinates are not in place, so you don't know which direction the pawns are moving. That's why the solution is so hard. The pawn on b2 looks like it's still sitting at home....but it's not. I looked at that queen move about 3 minutes before finding the solution and disregarded it because it looks like the pawn just takes the queen.

Since pompom posted the solution six years ago, the next challenge is to construct a proof game for the starting position. Who will be first?

I haven't looked at the solution but I think d7xbc7 queens and shuts down the queen #

Seems that is blocked by bishop...how about knight promoting from d7xbc8?

dxc8 with a queen promotion doesn't work. The bishop on h1 comes across the board to b7 blocking the check.

 

If you promote to a knight, the king just walks out of it.
