A tad chilly

Please give us some context to the photo?

Plus, I'm dubious about your claim.  Colder than the Vinson Massif?

Never mind, I guess it is summer there.

Haha, it was cold there too though -- below zero despite being summer.  I can't recall what they said temperature was at the South Pole, but both poles were warmer than here.

Coldest recorded temperature is a more accurate statement.

The photo is a shot of one of the many extreme snowdrifts around town -- this one (like most of the bigger ones) adjascent to an open park which allowed the wind to really pile the snow up quite high (note the exposed grass in the background where the snow came from).  The bus stop sign is about 8' tall, so this is a 5' plus snowdrift.  This is from the neighbourhood next to the one I live in (I have a 3-4' drift in my back yard, but it's only 3-4' wide and about 10' long so not nearly this volume of snow).

The blizzard was 9 days ago and there are still a couple of neighbourhoods on the leeward side of town that are still digging out.

135 degrees below zero in the south pole, within a degree or two.

P'shaw.  Only if you're a Nancy.

What really sends a chill down my spine is a frozen lager.

I've always enjoyed going for walks with a glass of beer when it's really cold out.  Granted, it's best when you've already had four or five inside, where it's warm.

I read a couple days ago that while October was cooler than normal across the contiguous 48, it was the warmest October ever recorded for all of Alaska.

There's a nice lake-effect event going on now.  Maybe 6 inches has fallen so far, and another 6-8 inches called for by tomorrow morning.  Those lake-effect bands are only a few miles wide, so there can be one place that gets more than two feet and 4 or 5 miles down the road they might have only 3 or 4 inches total.  There's no way to predict where the bands will line up.

Sounds a bit similar to our Convergence_Zone.

Looks like it, in terms of precipitation effect anyway.  But the snow bands don't have any ground-based cause, and they line up in different places from storm to storm.  Right now the bands in the UP aren't showing well on radar, but here's the current lake-effect banding in the lower peninsula.  Motion is almost always linear along the bands as it is in this current image, so once a band is established it just keeps dumping and dumping and dumping over the same area.  That's how Petoskey got their "100 inches in 100 hours" a few years back.

Well it is nice to see this thread revived again and it is very nice to see Cystem Phailure posting again. I looked at that interesting map with the moving green clouds and an cute song came to mind ( yep the old " Saginaw Michigan " number  lol ).

8 feet of snow in 4 days is quite a bit.

Cabadenwurt, you must have been even colder than I was last week.

Thanks for the post Grobe. Yes it was quite cold here but we had less snow, not many people got stuck out here.

If you were out in -135 temp unprotected, you would be frozen solid as a rock in just a few minutes.

Hey, cabby', I've got a gold claim in Alaska for ya' if you'll just get the hell out of town.

It got down below zero here for the first time last night.  When I got up it was -4F.  I just installed a geothermal furnace and several people told me geothermal doesn't work worth a damn' when it gets below zero.  They were wrong.  The new shack is really well insulated.  I'm tickled.  And I still haven't finished sprayfoaming the sill plate.

I paid some dude to insulate it.  That was a mistake.  He stuffed fiberglass insulation up against the sill, between the floor joists.  I'm not sure it does a damn' thing.

Heehee...haven't cut a stick of wood in months.

So Bigpoison, did you run out of laxative again ? ( you seem a little more grumpy than usual ).

Avatar of bigpoison

I was just jokin' about that Saginaw Michigan song.

Hey, bigpoison, did you steal goldendog's santa cap?  That one you're wearing looks an awful lot like the one he's worn in previous years.
