An invention that could make the world a better place?

it surprises me how few people mention that 10 humans on average need twice as much food, cars, buildings...than a group of 5 humans.

if we allow ourselves to keep growing then we will need more sources, there will be less space for trees and of course rules will be more strict. I personally don't want to live in a world like that :)

Exactly. We need to work on reeling in our obsession with the cycle of growth and consumption. They're both means to an end, not virtues unto themselves.

The world needs less innovation and invention to reduce consumption. If smartphones, cars, clothing, appliances manufacturers aren't selling NEWER models, designs, there would be less consumption.

like you said yourself the world needs less consumption. how is that possible if the amount of humans keep growing? that's the main problem I think if you want less consumption. we keep sacreficing our planet and freedom just to ignore the main problem.

of course you are right innovation does lead to more consumption and to be honest to myself every time I see a pretty t-shirt I buy it too 😂 but do we want to change our way of living? and how much do we consume more? I don't know the answer but I do know that with billions extra people you will need to produce billions extra pieces of clothing anyway 😂

we probably will act when it is already too late and when our freedom is gone by strict rules like having to pay for some fresh air/going out stuff like that :) I mean with this virus nowadays social distancing is already pretty impossible in some cities. imagine what kind of rules you get in 2100 if we keep growing like this.....

How Ironic more educated, higher income couples are reproducing one or two children. While less educated, lower income couples are reproducing 4 or more children.

It's not ironic at all. It's normal human behavior. People do what they are incentivized to do. You said it yourself, lower income couples are producing 4 or more children. The only way to pay for that is income redistribution. If the lower income couple can clearly see that they personally don't have to pay for much of what is needed to produce children, why wouldn't they?

It's always up for debate though.

Agree, I've been saying that over-population is the root of all evil for 45 years. It increases the rate of all sorts of problems, like resource utilization, pollution, de-forestation, etc.... Also global warming may not be as much of a problem as believed as climate events are largely random and green house gases are only one small part of the driving factors, most are natural. There has never been that much of a real scientific debate on it, the issue has been taken over by political points of view. The driving factor in climate may be out of human control. Small 1-2% variations in the output of the sun cause major climatic changes. Also things like irregularities in the earth's rotation and orbit, and variance of ocean currents caused by plate tectonics. Then there are random events on top of it like meteors and volcanoes. Also studies on soil moisture in Canada and the U.S. have concluded that it increased overall as the climate got slightly warmer. Makes sense, warmer air holds more moisture. As an old-time Geologist I can say for certain that major extinction events take place during colder climate events and that life flourishes when the climate is warm.

Much like the crisis du jour, covid, it's not what is true that concerns people. It's what is repeated that concerns people.
