nothing to see here
I was hoping you would see that last post as i was sure you could answer it, i live in the north of england so is this star sirius? I thought it might be, the star the pyramids are aligned to no less.
I ask because i have recently moved into a village and the night stars seem so much brighter because there is less light here, i have never noticed a star that looks so large or shines so bright, one night it appeared right next to the full moon and looked ominous.
Sirius is very bright, only excelled by planets, the moon, etcetera among permanent residents. On some nights when the atmosphere is really unsteady it twinkles like mad and puts on a light show.
It has a companion star (being a binary system) and though it is difficult the two can be visually separated in a typical scope like I have. Sirius visibly wobbles slowly as the two rotate around their common center of gravity.
Never been able to though.
The stars I heard that matched up with the pyramids are the three in Orion's belt--the three stars that point to Sirius, btw. I've also heard that the pyramids are not placed as we see the stars but in such a way that the uneven line of the stars and pyramids match up. so that if the ground were transparent and you were under the pyramids you would see the same pattern in each set.
I could probably explain that better. There's likely a diagram of this out there somewhere.
Come to think of it you are correct im sure,Though the shafts in the pyramids line up to sirius im sure ish, you have me questioning myself now, i knew it was the constellation of orion that they were aligned to, it seems that there may be a similar set up complete with sphinx on mars also, though i have only seen a couple of the satellite pics, until we get there it is down to perspective but if that could be proven there would no longer be any need for this thread.
So the verdict is sirius? I couldnt imagine what else it could be but it does look very strange all by itself. Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

Not Sirius if you could be seeing it tonight.
If it's overheadish it's probably Vega.
Not sirius? It is not overhead but is certainly the brightest star ive ever seen and yes its there right now.
Jupiter rises at about 10 PM in the east.
It's very bright too.
P.S. Recent amateur shot of Jupiter (using a C14--14" scope). Pretty amazing detail.

Hmm not sure if that is east, havent got a compass handy, but given the time perhaps it could be that.
I don't think they ever moved or used the 1000 ton stones. They remain unused in the quarry.
Not true, there were at least 3 of these stones used in baalbeck, all alongside each other, with possibly even larger ones beneath, the stone you are talking about is called the stone of the pregnant woman, an image of which was posted earlier in this thread, which still stands partly quarried.
According to my source, the largest stones used were about 800 tons, and the quarry was only a mile away.
800 tons? Thats like packing more than 400 small trucks together. If you mean short tons. In gross tons that is about one million, seven hundred and ninety-two thousand pounds.
100 years ago, it would have been impossible to move a stone only a tenth of this weight 800 feet! We are talking about moving it a mile in a time period where the only practical use for the wheel was for making pottery and chariots. Besides, nothing made from wood could move anything near that weight. And certainly not without mechanical force. If you're thinking dug in canals and boats. You would have to have a boat the size of noahs ark to move a stone this heavy. Chances are it still woudnt be enough. It would be impossible to lift.
I havnt looked at any of the stones myself.
If the “star” appears near the horizon only for a few hours. It is probably venus. If not, since its august its probably sirius. Also, if it is sirius. It should align with orions belt. Opposite the direction of his bow.

Its not near the horizon either and orions belt is nowhere in sight, im more confused than ever now.

Venus is impossible. Obscured by the sun.
Sirius essentially the same situation.
Best bet so far: Vega or Jupiter.
Can't do much more without more description, such as in which constellation it appears.
It stands more or less alone, it is to the right of a kite shaped cluster of stars, and further left is a large constellation i think it is cancer.
I just went out for another look as it is an extremely clear night, and i swear to god i saw a "star" moving across the sky, bright at first and then fading, then vanishing altogether, i keep seeing these things and i have no explaination for them, certainly not planes, too high and too fast.

Classic satellite.

Might be Vega if it is just about overhead. I think it is 4th brightest.
