Totally agree, lets keep it friendly and avoid things that generally bring out the worst in most people.

Even though I did state my position there on a post, I do agree with you. It will create problems, of that I am sure. Kudos to you.

I don't see the harm in spirited discussion and debate on any subject. However, as this is a private board, the managers thereof can do as they wish. Politics, however, is going to bleed through in many ostensibly apolitical discussions regardless.

Perhaps you haven't tasted San Miguel Beer from the Philippines.  Over here, coffee seems to be the beverage in and around chess (when I played it actively before).  I agree with you Erik--it's necessary.

Actually if we held a tournament between the religions who would win? Maybe tourneys should tell us who rules too. We can become a Chess-state planet where people must play or die! Bwahahahaahaha (kurse euwe sudden but inevitable betrayal)

Or maybe it would be more fun if chess was outlawed then we get to underground and play Hogan's Heroes.

Can we ban FIDE since they have nothing to do with chess?

I like the suggestions here. Keep off Religion and Politics. Talk Chess, Beer, and Tea :-)

"Talk Chess, Beer, and Tea"

Well chess isn't off-topic; tea is, well, a non-topic (sorry), and beer - I've already heard too many preposterous claims....

SunWorshipper

We should always discuss within the boundaries of decorum. One should always listen with an open mind to what others are saying to grow. If the administrators of this site believe that the contributors to the forum are unable to stay above the bottomline, they should take such a decision. But there will be a price to pay.

I don't know any myspace and don't chat anywhere else. There would obviously be others like me. Chess is my pastime but it is not the centre of my life. If one can not explore for oneself and find what is true religion, which means questions like life, sorrow, joy, death and love then all other topics will be very shallow.

Charlie91
I agree that true religion is important, but I guess that's not the point here.  Even if 99.996% are behaving appropriately, it takes that 0.004% to ruin the broth.  mr_inconsistent, you may drop me a message anytime (we can exchange emails).   Thanks!

Whew!

I thought for a moment you wre going to say sex.

sex is nice topic,

"things that would bring us together, not pull us apart" -Erik.

But NO posting of nude pictures. Laughing

are we all in legal age here?

If we are talking about alcohol, then you can go no further than my beautiful Island for the best produce... Obviously I would think the Northern country produces the best, but I would have to state the the Republic has damn fine produce as well... tea? Thats for oul dolls, and only consumed when injured (with lots of sugar). Politics and Religion I usually give a miss.. I can go out in the street anytime for that.

Sex is an essential topic that should be talked about often, if just to educate the selfish amongst us ;)

LordoftheTeapot

HmmmMmm.... Sex and/or tea.... ?  I like both hot, but only one fresh from the pot!

Just keep all off topic subjects to those that contain 3 letters, simple. Wink

One loves a cup of tea in the afternoon.

Since religion can be perverted(islam, holy wars, salem witch trials et al) and politics is already perverted, let's stick to the safer topics like beer, wine, tea, sex?,hobbies, books, etc. i for one love beer and tea(not at the same time)and see no reason to not have a discussion of them and any related topics.

But if you talk about tea, you end up talking about the Boston Tea Party, which leads to talking about taxes, which leads to politics.

Looks like we're going to have to ban discussing tea. Sorry!   Wink

Awww... Guys this is no fair, I like arguing politics and religion, for example, we FOUND WMD in Iraq. WMD are a weapons that are nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons (I'm just playing devil's advocate). And by the way, we should be worried about Russia, not Iraq.

Considering there are a fair number of Russians contributing to this site, I think you should be careful what you say.  Chess is blind to many things in life, and that's part of the beauty of it.  When I play you, we express ourselves through 32 pieces on a board, and it doesn't matter what our views are on anything else.....that's the way it has and always will be.

Hugh_T_Patterson
I AM HALF RUSSIAN! (unfortunately not the chess playing half). I am proud of my heritage. However, people are entitled to their opinions. Besides, Russians are not sneaky, just smart. Seriously, lets keep it nice and easy. Remember, we're here because of our love of chess. Outside the doors of my home recording studio is a little note. It says: Please hang your non musician opinions at the door.
