Can you "Capture" a king?

A while back, I was playing in a tournament in real life chess. The man I was playing almost had me beat. He kept checking my king and I had a feeling the game was almost over. When it was my turn I moved my king to a space that I didn't realize was being protected by one of his rooks, then I hit the clock. Clumsy, I know, but I had pretty much given up on that game. Instead of telling me that I was in check the man moved his rook and captured my king as if it were any other piece on the board. When I realized what he had done I yelled at him (in a very polite manner) and told him that he couldn't do that. He claimed that his coach told him he could take the king if he moved into check and then his opponent hit the clock. After several minutes of "civilized debate" he agreed to put the king back on the board and we continued playing. A few moves later he won the game anyway so the outcome didn't really change. We both shook hands and said "good game."

What I want to know is if this is an actual rule. Can you actually "capture" a king if he moves into check? If you know the answer to my dilema, please tell me, and I'll know if his coach gave him bad information, or if I owe him an apology.

if u moved into a check ,opponent should tell u that u r in check, then u can change ur move.

king cannot be assassined ,should only be prisoned.
