Funny analogies - have to think about that one

There are a lot of analogies between chess and ancient warfare; like rooks as chariots, cavalry and infantry only being able to kill by flanking, etc..
But how do you explain pawn promotion in a real life context?
Does the infantry unit get to the enemy supply lines, and steal horses to become a knight, or a chariot to become a rook? Do they release captured friendly units? But if so, it's possible for them to become a unit that hasn't been captured, so that can't explain it.
