Covid-19 Discussion (moderated)

I've been keeping out of these discussions for a while - the last time I did so was when IfPatriotGames was championing the other side of things. Did she cross the line too many times, or did the reality of COVID in Oregon just overwhelm her previous opinions?

I mean I’ve been FORCED to do that as an essential worker.

If you are vulnerable, and you self quarantine...how does it affect you one bit if I go to work and my kids go to school?

This is the first tile in recorded history we have quarantined the healthy and if you don’t mind my saying so it’s been highly ineffective.

Ummm...the word quarantine, from the 1400s, comes from the practice of quarantining ships offshore for a period of time (sometimes 40 days) to prevent the spread of cholera, etc.  Thus, "quaranta giorni", or 40 days.  So, by definition, the word covers quarantining the healthy as well as the sick.  Try again.

Are you seriously going to be this obtuse?  You know what I meant:

This is the first time in history we have quarantined HEALTHY PEOPLE to control a pandemic.

Is that better?  Was that really necessary?

That poster has never posted here (they aren't blocked or anything), but is still very active in the "other" Covid thread where misinformation is running amok wink.png.  Rural Oregon and Washington are still bastions of Covid denial (and few hidden KKK enclaves still hidden in the hills for good measure?).

Portland has about 5 other things they should be worrying about a lot more than Covid

Ermm, ok, once again.  The practice of quarantine has included both healthy and sick people since it's very first inception 600 years ago and it has never been any different.  You are making a claim that is pure BS.  Not sure how that isn't sinking in.  Probably because it's a talking point you got somewhere else and blindly believe?

Obtuse?  If the shoe fits...

Sadly, that's the way it seems to be nowadays: most folks circulating in their own media bubble and occasionally stepping into the other and finding themselves amazed at what's being said. They try to enlighten them and arguments ensue.

Measurement against reality just doesn't seem to work, because there's always some sort of spin to keep on believing what they do. It leads to some strange places, such as one party having more members in the House of Reps who believe in QAnon conspiracy theories than black members.

grin.png My daughter's fasting from Netflix, Youtube, etc for a month as a part of a charity fundraising event, so we've been watching a lot of our DVD / Blu-ray back collection. We watched The Shawshank Redemption the other day - nice reference wink.png

One of my favorite movies.  I often feel like Andy Dufresne here on chess.com wink.png...

64 million cases worldwide, 14 million in the US.

That's 4 million news cases in under a week worldwide, and 1 million new cases in under a week in the US.  The increasing numbers are widely publicized, yet, the TSA recorded a record number of plane travelers on the Sunday after Thanksgiving since the start of the outbreak.  Insanity.  It's like people have a sense of entitlement when it comes to Covid-19..."well, I did my part but enough is enough...this should be over by now".

That's not how viruses think wink.png.

And wait for the effect of Thanksgiving day...

In good news, UK approved Pfizer vaccine. The end of this nightmare is closer.

Unfortunately, governments can't allow bada**es to decide by themselves.

This is why laws and law enforcement exist, to stop you from doing whatever the hell you want.  You are free to choose to break said laws and suffer said enforcement.

btickler... My man, you are the perfect example of someone who cannot think for himself. You're a great reasoner (hence good chess player). Where is your line? You assumed I wasn't towing the line... got to take your queen for that one, really. I sincerely hope you are employed, don't have to stay locked at home, live somewhere that is open to common sense, and have a giant life savings. Really I do. I hope you are also born again. Peace Brother.

And I hope you didn't vote for a right wing president the last two elections because that will explain why you are out of cash right now!

Here up north we got some help because we have the common sense to vote to the center! so everyone got help not only the friends of Mitch and of your president.

Cases are based on pcr tests which have been diagnosed unreliable by the court of appeal  in  Lissabon. The pcr test cycly are too high according to topdoctors like Elke De Klerk so its almost always false positive or negative as for deaths USA will have the same number of deaths as every year the only thing we managed to combat is our free and welfare society.

Add 300000 to that «same number» this year.

Wrong my right wing Fox fan.

The PCR is very sensitive and will detect the presence of viral RNA (with PCR the virus is detected by targeting one or more gene fragments). The gene fragment might be detected and the virus “positively found”. But is this viral RNA active? That is, does the detected viral RNA have the capacity to reproduce or infect the person (virulence) or get transmitted to other people (infectivity)?

“PCR detection of viruses is helpful so long as its accuracy can be understood: it offers the capacity to detect RNA in minute quantities, but whether that RNA represents infectious virus may not be clear.

Positives are called PCR Positive asymptomatic if they present no symptoms.

“PCR detection of viruses is helpful so long as its limitations are understood; while it detects RNA in minute quantities, caution needs to be applied to the results as it often does not detect infectious virus.”

I hope you aren't.  Born again, that is.  That would be a waste of a reincarnation wink.png.

You know when I know somebody has no leg to stand on?  When they start out their argument with "my man"...that's a "standing around the beer cooler having PBRs with my bros and they just said something I don't understand and can't get on board with" argument.

Here's some others you can use in future:

"Dude, you have to learn to chill out about stuff..."

"Well, I don't know about that, but let me grab you a cold one..."

"Let's not waste our bro time talking about serious stuff..."

These will all allow to extricate yourself from a losing engagement without anyone paying much attention...well, if they already have a few beers in them.  I guess that's the catch.

Lol.  Straight from the conspiracy zone.  Read this AP fact check news release directly countering your BS claim by "Elke":

AP removes the BS.  Letters to live by.  I've let you stay here a while, but you are continuing to post dubious links and not supporting any of your assertions with any legitimate sources.  This is your last warning.  The next thing you reference should not be from a YouTube video or a blog wink.png.

Worldwide cases will hit 70 million tomorrow.  The US is approaching 16 million cases, probably will pass that by tomorrow night.  I don't post about about the "death" milestones...I don't want to sensationalize those who have passed away...but we're approaching such a milestone and I find it surreal that since just a couple of weeks ago when the last presidential debate was held, there have been 65,000+ dead in the US.

That is uncomfortably higher than the entire total of troops lost in Vietnam in the 19 years the US fought there, in a couple of weeks, and to make it worse...it's not even making the top news headlines, the US is still reading stories each day about yet another election lawsuit being thrown out of court.  As I said, surreal.
