Do male players on this site deal with this?

I ask in earnest. Are there people on here who just say weird nasty stuff to each other regardless of gender? With no provocation I semi-regularly get comments like the one below, though this one was particularly gross. More often it's basic sophomoric jibberish, or people asking if I have a boyfriend and when I ignore them (3-5 minute games usually dont allow much typing time) they get really nasty. I have wondered if this is because I am female or it's just something that happens on here, maybe they're trying to mess with peoples heads to improve their odds or something?

I just changed my profile picture to a chubby cartoon character eating cookies instead of my face to hopefully curb the nasty comments.

If you can't read what the person below said, here is the dialogue:

chess996: dum.b bitch

me: whoa weirdo

chess996: If we didn't need women for procreation, we could use the meat from your bodies to feed the homeless.

no excuse for writing that kind of nonsense.    some guys think they can write whatever they want to females.   yes, they could also bully guys too, but women are seen as the "weaker" sex by many, and they may go out of their way to try and connect with females.

sorry you endured that.    there is little sense fighting back with words, as that's what those people probably want.     Why not just hit "disable chat" whenever anyone goes over the top with you ?

Yes, men regularly get insulted by immature opponents too.

And if our opponent thinks we might be part of a minority or sensitive to a specific type of insult, he will use that.

I sincerely believe that had nothing to do with sexism, he was just trying to annoy you.

Oh wow. I'm fairly sure he'd be instantly banned for that If you reported him.

Avatar of Martin_Stahl

I would report it.

I would certainly report it.....you DO NOT  need to put up with stupidity.  It is really a shame and very disrespectful.  I hope chess.com  take proper action against him.  I suggest you disable your chat from future games and block idiots if they start bothering your page.

I've turned off chat on live games as well as putting my dog on my profile pic because of this sort of crap. It's a shame, because I do like chatting with nice people on the site, but the garbage that comes as well just isn't worth putting up with. I rather wish I had picked a more gender neutral username.

I completely relate......then I read posts around here of men wondering WHY  women dont play chess on the site more often....what a shame....

You were obviously upset but yes we get slapheads as well, people who cannot divorce their egocentricities from the events on the chess board.  You must realise that its not a reflection of you or your gender or chess.com, but of the manners and upbringing and disposition of the person attempting to vilify you. Drop kick him over the moon and forget about him, he really is not worth getting upset over.  Take practical action, block him or get your brothers to find out where he lives and kick his A$$.

Thank you all for responding.

I did report him, I don't know what became of it.

I'd rather not immediately disable chat with everyone, because most people on here aren't like that.

I hate to hear that other groups of people are harassed on here, like Dirty_Sandbagger mentioned, but it also makes it a little easier to stomach knowing that some people are just indisciminantly full of hate for everyone. It makes me feel like women are less of a singled out target.

Disable chat when this happens. Responding is no different than petting the dog when he craps on the rug; you just don't do that. Be sure to report this as well.

Anyway it's not something to get worked up about. It's unfortunate and shouldn't happen but these kind of folks aren't worth your time.

Terrible. Sorry it happened. :/

I get these type of people all the time.  Usually the insult comes in the form of something akin to "stupid American, you suck", or "here's a quarter go buy a penis."  People are horrible.

What a pathetic schlep. Yes the schleps like that are usually men, unfortunately. I don't see that many disgusting comments from women. They give all men a bad name. Mental issues and unfulfilled longings.

I dunno i had one girl crack up once because i had two queens and one was sufficient and another who beat me up and said she was going to post the game on facebook and tell all her friends and i would be better taking up volleyball.

Have to admit the guy has a sense of humour. A very dark one, but still...

The worst thing you can do is to give importance to that kind of gibberish. Like oppening a thread about it.

Not for a very long time (like 15 years or so), but I've also used chat to disturb my opponents. They are more prone to mistakes if you get to their nerves.

It's the only way you have online to use psychology to put some extra pressure on them. It's up to you to choose to fall for it or not.

Avatar of MBClevenger

Don't take any smack from them; tell them how sad it is that they can't be decent about losing a game. They don't like preaching.

If only a very small percentage of people make nasty comments and only a very small percentage of people on chess.com are women, then it wouldn't be surprising that getting a nasty comment from a woman on chess.com would be an extremely rare event.

That guy obviously has no kind of life. He deserves something between pity and scorn.

Trash talk is definitely around on chess.com, particularly in blitz and bullet. Trash talkers are the minority but you can run into them from time to time. As a woman I would guess you have a higher chance of both receiving positive attention and of receiving negative attention -- you're basically noticed more. That gives you an advantage on dating websites over men, but probably a disadvantage on sites like chess.com since I'm assuming you don't come to chess.com for that :)

In any event I don't support people treating you badly. And I'd say the same thing to a man. I don't like humans being treated badly.
