I smoked weed for at least 40 years. Has it hurt my chess playing?

Of course, without the weed I might be rated 3500 by now...

Note: I live in Canada, where weed is perfectly legal.

There are half a dozen marijuana shops within a mile of my house. But smoking weed would mean I would need to lie on the ATF 4473. My state has legalized pot, but my country has so far failed to do so.

There is legislation now to change that...

There is a plethora of cannabinoid receptors in various parts of the brain including the hippocampus, basal ganglia, and neocortex all responsible for differing functions called upon when studying and playing chess. THC mimics natural neurotransmitters like anandamine and when it attaches to cannabinoid receptors it thereby impairs the natural chemicals from performing their duties. The manifestations of such obstruction include slowed reaction time stemming from the basal ganglia, impaired memory resulting from the hippocampus, and altered thinking while grappling with complex tasks in the neocortex.

thanks for clearing that up  :-)

I don't do drugs, but it's hilarious to me that your employer has to demand you pee in a cup for them to pass your bar of a "decent job". I don't think any other country besides the US has a widespread practice of mandatory drug tests in the workplace.

Such a weird, degrading and dystopian practice.

You pee in a cup for minimum wage jobs.  I had to give hair samples.

I had to give random samples throughout my last job.  They'd call you at any time and say "come on down" and you'd pee in a cup.  Random drug testing they called it.  $120k/yr may be minimum wage out in Cali, but it's not here.

Daily chess, rapid, blitz, bullet... thc will pretty much do the job. Roll it up in some good hemp sheets for a slow roast and you're good to go. #tegridy

Jeeze… I worked for two years mentoring at the Canadian Army's Combined Arms Tactics School... and they never once required a drug test.

I found it amusing that a moderately strong chess player ended up working at the Tactics School.

I speak from experience, don't smoke weed kids. It's fun and enjoyable, but when you use it regularly you will be perfectly happy to stay in your comfort zone and do nothing with your life.

That is by no means always true (and I too speak from experience).

Oh I'm sure there are many who manage to smoke go to church occasionally and in moderation and be normal productive members of society at the same time.

But there's no denying that a lot of pot smokers church goers use orders of magnitude more than they should and are in complete denial of the negative effects it has on their life. I know/knew a lot of people like this.

Fixed it for you.

I didn't know they could test your hair, that's interesting. Ok in your case I suppose there are some jobs where drug testing has some use. It's still pretty weird how common it is.

Yes hair testing is pure evil.  One night getting high and they find it 6 months later, fire you from your job and ruin your life.

You just have to remind yourself to be active, just like everybody else. Regular stoners don't fall into inertia. You also need some regular content. Example: if you like a little thc early in the morning then you obviously can't be blitzed out of your brains on your way to work. Just a little like a sip of coffee... It'll help you avoid road rage too 😁.

Inteligent technical response for those who are in the medical field...In simple terms playing chess while stoned will give a slight advantage of thinking abilities than those who choose not to alter their state of mind...

Depends on the individual and the position, but it certainly should be considered performance enhancing.

I only know what works for me...Playing chess over a long period of time without the use of thc I tend to get headaches...cranky and annoyance for every distracting sounds I hear....With the aid of thc I am more focused...ignore minor annoyances with that "so what" attitude for losing... complimenting my opponent for winning...
