Many made hooch in prison. The system was corrupted same as the "free world".
From Marijuana to Heroin was available for a price.
Sugar/fruit & a little time is all one really needs to produce alcohol.

lemaudit - the yeast is in the air. no need to add that. fruit with enough sugar will ferment. The bank was FDIC. That is why I got fed time.

You make it sound easier than it is! There is a substantial risk of unwanted bacteria turning the brew off, for example.

I learned from those who already knew the process. The feds began removing the fruit as best they could so we typically used tomato paste. 1 pound of that and 1 pound of sugar in a plastic bag stored in various places. The bag would need to be checked from time to time to release the gasses or it would explode.

The very large amount of sugar might have helped protect against bacteria, as it would tend to desiccate them. Like jam (when home-made jam without preservatives goes off it is usually mold).

More sugar = more alcohol content. Heat is a factor as well. We would try and store it by hot water pipes and if not confiscated would have potent hooch in just a few days.
