Neuroscience is a hard science (the part of medical science relating to the nervous system and brain). Psychology is largely a soft science. The distinction is that one is primarily physical in focus, the other conceptual, relating to sometimes approximate, very high level, epiphenomena.

Elroch

Entirely by chance I came across a specific example that illustrates my point beautifully, in a World Service radio documentary this morning.

There has been a large psychological study concerned with kindness, based on the Kindness Test, a questionnaire answered by many (60,000, if I recall?) people about their behaviour.  This involves such a lot of subjectivity in design of the questions and interpretation of the answers  that it illustrates why psychology is largely a soft science (although I am sure there would be very strong agreement on the kindness of different behaviour, which helps explain why psychology remains a meaningful science).

But then neuroscientists imaged the brains of some participants to see if there was a physical basis for the spectrum from extreme altruist to psychopath.  The simple answer is that there is at least one strong factor - the size of the amygdala.  This part of the brain is associated with emotions, including fear and anxiety, but also seems causally related to empathy. Psychopaths tend to have small amygdalas with low activity according to the neuroscientists' physical observations, and extreme altruists the opposite. It is now known to be associated with the variation from emotionless to "sensitive" and lack in empathy to extreme empathy, and to be crucial to things like identifying emotions in facial expressions of others. It was a clever choice to examine the brains of those who had donated a kidney - an act of extreme altruism. Yes, they have large, active amygdalas.
