Les Paul. Duh.
SG is so light and screamy. Feels insubstantial and shrill. Les Paul is so solid and rich, with its Humbucker pickups. Jimmy Page ripped it up with a Les Paul. Good enough for me.
Having said that, if I had about $3000-$5000 USD to burn on a guitar right now, I'd go for a really nice PRS guitar. Love how they look, and I can tell by looking at them (and maybe picking one up in a guitar shop once), they play like a dream. And I've owned a few Les Pauls, including a classic cream colored Les Paul Custom, in my 20's and it was killer. Awesome awesome guitar. Right now I have a Collings Acoustic, and no electric. The Collings has the best most rounded volume of any acoustic I've ever had. For its size, it really projects. Not the deep toned slapback of a dreadnaught, but like an equalizer was put to it to give it a large spread spectrum. Collings are manufactured in Texas, which is surprising, and I wouldn't normally make my first choice, but Austin is cool, and it was the best sounding all around playing guitar in the $3500 range in the shop, and I even tried some nice Taylors and Martins. But I was biased - I was trading in my Breedlove, which didn't have very good volume, so that was my priority. In retrospect, I might have settled for a compromise on volume and gone for other qualities. Wouldn't give up the Collings now though, would just like more guitars. It's a really nicely made instrument.
But I want an electric again. And a few more acoustics. I like the unplugged opportunity, because you never know when the power might go out. I'm not saying North Koreans, but ...
Gibson SG or Les Paul? Which one do you prefer and why?
