Have you also read 'The Girl with Seven Names'?

no not yet Janie but i've just been looking at the reviews of it on Amazon, i will read it as soon as i can

It's an emotional/chilling read, I'll be curious to hear what you think.  I shall read 'In Order to Live' next and see for myself.  It will be interesting to see if the two characters in each book shared similar views of their country.  Cheers for the tip.

you're welcome, glad you're going to read 'In order to live'

this should be with me by Thursday, i'll share my thoughts with you when i've read it, thanks!

And this is Hou Yifan [Women's World Chess Champion] fed up of playing with too many women. 02/02/2017

Babytigrrr

I really don't understand her decision.  She wasn't at all disadvantaged with the pairings and besides, I believe they were done by software... therefore, it's the luck of the draw.  Bizarre.

Babytigrrr

Men are pigs.  By men, I mean 'some men'... by some men I mean just one man, when I say 'just one' man... I meant you.  No offence.

Babytigrrr

That was a joke btw.

So robbie could use kaynight to make the pa amb tomaquet for the Catalans, instead of a sheep. I wonder how the ham will cure on his homeland though.

Chess players are machiavellian. And by chess players I mean some chess players. And by some chess players I mean me.

I think it was all rigged.

Plus Gibraltar [Jabal Tariq, جبل طارق] should be Arab.

Or at least Spanish...

No offense intended.

Babytigrrr

Going back to Hou Yifan... IF the pairings were indeed fixed, then yeah, that isn't right.  And maybe it should be investigated... throwing her game like that though... I think is not the right way to go about it.  Never throw games.

And this is this Year's Shatranij Queen on the Mountain of Tariq

I like Hou, as does much of the chess world - players, fans and organisers alike - but I feel she let herself down yesterday. Her "protest", such as it was, raised a question mark against the organisers at Gibraltar, who have done much to promote women's chess over the years and Brian Callaghan's frustration is tangible in that interview on the previous page.

Plus it makes her look as though she's miffed about being downed by Ju Wenjun...

Babytigrrr

At the same time though... I commend her for standing up (even if I don't agree with her methodology) for women's chess and sexism in general.  And it has certainly got people's attention.

JFSebastianKnight

Hmhm, your observation is correct, Ghost. The beaming young girl who is slightly leaning onto Hikaru's powerful left shoulder is Ju Wenjun by all means.

BT, it just dawned on me that this thread of yours could blossom into a proper full-grown Chess.com Gossip Section (if given the right watering and seeding, that is).

And that would certainly keep the real erm bad hombres away.

The first one has that Mexican touch I think, it's me who would need a translation!

  1. Wenju defeated her in the penultimate round, I was following the game live, a beautifully played French defence. I suspect that Yifan was probably deeply affected by this and coupled with the statistically unlikely pairings noted and commented on by Jovanka Houska and Simon Williams who were commentating on the games, vented her frustration by playing the grob and not a very promising variation at that.

If the pairings were manipulated and its difficult to see why the organisers would do so in an open tournament that has the reputation for being one of the best in the world, not only because of its location and broad spectrum of players but also the high prize money offered to female players then Yifan has a legitimate complaint. If however they were not and there was no gender bias then she has not and its a great pity to tarnish not only her own reputation but the reputation of the tournament which everyone I seen interviewed was enjoying very much.

Yeah! Look at this for example: http://www.wordreference.com/es/en/translation.asp?spen=pinche

I once got in trouble because of it.  :(
