except for those who are not 'expert' on them. And probably won't be.
'somebody' (not I) might want pingpong now but won't get that either.

My comment was not addressed to you nor had anything to do with you. So ping your own pong.

Lemmings running off cliffs is a myth...unless you are a Disney film crew and staged it yourself:

https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=wildlifenews.view_article&articles_id=56#

What is true is that lemmings propagate very quickly, and when there are too many in one area, they may disperse in numbers that are readily visible to local people.

I prefer my "zaddy" interactions with any paddling being done the more traditional way around, but I can see how this might not work in this fantasy situation given the players involved.

regarding real pingpong on a pingpong table I was good at that and even better at real tennis on a 78 foot court.
But age catches up.
And just now I caught a bit of a post by someone else that said 'not addressed to you' who didn't seem to realize that my post didn't name anybody.
The tag team always misses that ....

Regarding the US heat wave - was looking for more updates on it earlier today.
Several records broken yesterday on that but today is supposed to have more but I checked too early in the day.
In other news the Gemini free version seems to have ended today.
Lasted a lot longer than Grok did.
Chatgpt has gotten dumber these days.
Leaving Copilot.
I haven't tried them all yet though.

"Caught a bit of a post"? Now that's funny.

For a man who claims to not want ping pong you invent a lot of reasons to ping your pong.

I wasn't commenting to you or about you. I was responding to your girlfriend.

I know but it still makes an appropriate metaphor.

from the internet:
"Today’s heat wave across the U.S. has been nothing short of historic. Here are some of the standout temperature records set or tied on June 23:

New York City tied its daily record at 96°F, the hottest day there since August 2022.
Philadelphia hit a new daily high and is expected to reach 101°F tomorrow, potentially the hottest June day on record for the city.
Boston is forecast to reach 102°F on Tuesday, which could break its all-time June high.
Washington, D.C. is enduring a stretch of triple-digit days, with highs around 100°F, breaking multiple daily records.
Burlington, Vermont reached 97°F, making it one of the three hottest June days ever recorded there.
Plattsburgh, New York hit 100°F, only the fourth time in nearly 80 years it’s reached that mark.
Mitchell, South Dakota recently shattered its daily record with 104°F, surpassing the previous 101°F.
Marquette, Michigan broke its daily high with 93°F.
Several Midwest cities like Green Bay, WI, and Lansing, MI, tied or set all-time records for warmest low temperatures—overnight lows in the upper 70s to low 80s"
--------------------------
Notice that some of those records are for any day in June not just for the day of the month.
And Tuesday - that's tomorrow - is expected to be the peak of the heat wave in many places.
The thing that's the worst in a heat wave is sustained lack of relief at night though.
Lows at night refusing to drop below 70. Combined with humidity.
For weeks.

I figured that was probably the case, but it doesn't hurt to dispel this myth for anyone else reading.

Dispelling myths online is a job for Don Quixote.

Regarding heat:

I seems the northeast is getting the worst.

Although it was high 90s here yesterday and will be the same today, it's far worse a few hundred miles north.

We will still be breaking longevity records for sustained 90s but some relief at night near 75 - 80.

For those of you inhabiting those damp little islands in the north Atlantic, that's hot.

Thee_Ghostess_Lola

yes so true. we watch heat index moreso here:

I would have thought anything much over 100 Fahrenheit and you are sunk if it's 100% humidity. You can't lose any heat then, and are going to be warmer than the air, so guaranteed heatstroke. Anything over 106 core temperature and death is getting likely.

It's a job for everyone...and if everyone did it, things would be a lot better online. The myths spread the same way in the first place.

Have you ever watched this video?

It is very popular online, and people do "reaction" videos to it all the time to talk about how it "affected them". It is also riddled with so many errors that you, as retired history teacher, might want to brace your cardiovascular system before watching it...

The war is wrong. The fort is wrong. The size of the British fleet is wrong. The quote by Washington is wrong. The number of prisoners is wrong. The details of the circumstances of the flag itself are wrong. The casualties are wrong. On and on and on...yet this video continues to spread because it plucks the heart strings of people that don't know any better. In various reaction comments, you will read accounts of middle school history teachers all over the country saying they will show the video to their classes...

The original poster has closed comments because so many educated people kept correcting all the mistakes. It's a travesty.

Something like that.
Air conditioning is key.
But can cause so much demand for electricity during a heat wave that there's power failures and then there's no air conditioning.
That's what caused many senior deaths during a New York City heat wave.

But there was still cold water in the taps.

Yes I've seen it. At least the youtuber added a disclaimer that there were a lot of complaints about the errors in the video and a link to the true story, assuming there is one.

Never forget history is written by the victors and this is no different.

What's worse in my view is the number of government officials, sworn to uphold a constitution they have never read. It's a small wonder the average citizen has no clue.

It is, after all, just another bloated war fable just like this one.

The information about the heat wave is getting clearer.
Supposedly Denver now getting relief but Chicago not yet.
And the record June temperatures being broken in June still fall short of records set in July.
The days will now start to get shorter but the oceans and the Gulf of Mexico hold up the temperaters and the humidity. Or increase them.
Since the Gulf is further south and its surface water gets heated a lot more compared to the Atlantic and because of the way the winds blow from the Gulf upward over the US -
that's producing a lot of humdity.

This is the spot where Washington crossed. I've travelled the Delaware in a canoe.

Washington crossed in winter when the river is low and slow and likely half frozen over.
