Global warming - an urgent problem requiring radical solution (no politics or religion)
Yet 60-70 pounds would be an incredibly unhealthy weight for an adult man, while 60-70 kg would indicate gross obesity in a young girl. $60K for a family breadwinner would qualify you for some public assistance in most counties in the Bay Area, while it is a pipe dream for a Central Valley farmworker. You moan about someone driving only 60 kph on the freeway, while going 70 mph past a grade school when classes have just let out is a serious crime.
On the other hand, 21 is the voting/drinking age in many jurisdictions, 21 wins at blackjack, 20% vinegar is the standard weed killer, 20 questions is a classic guessing game.
Both numbers have the same claim to be "recognizable in real life"--zero.
Wait human comfort levels are 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit?????? Jeez California is WAY too hot then because I'm freezing at 70 degrees sometimes
Yet you have been whining that the nights in New York were too cold because the temperatures dipped into the 40s, a temperature that no one has any real medical reactions to. Perception of what is uncomfortably cold or hot, or what the most pleasant temperature might be differs to different individuals.
For example, when temperatures get above much 80F (27C) and most people are enjoying the warm summer day, I am enervated, uncomfortable, and tired. On the other hand, if I'm engaging in vigorous physical activity in 10F (-12C) weather I get overheated in a heavy coat or ski jacket and wear a heavy flannel shirt or sweater.
Judging everyone else by your own reactions and preferences is meaningless.
Barely 1 month left until "summer" and temps are still dipping close to the 40s at night smh.
EE I think at least one of your charts is showing the 'dew point' for the right hand column.
Are you getting those charts through the airport?
A nighttime low only four degrees below the daytime high is unlikely.
And charts generally don't show high for the day and high for the night.
Airports keep track of dew points apparently.

Manmade global warming to cause major extinctions?
Possibly - but if it isn't reversed soon enough - then the chaos that that will produce could cause a lot more damage than it is now and its already causing a lot.
The world has many other major problems and doesn't need more.
But it gets more.
I've got an article on string theory.....what thread do I put it in?..... disregard,....I put it in the Cosmology thread. ![]()
New heat wave coming from the Pacific Ocean....this is for everyone except E.E.

Prof OT ? ...think theres any way to do a full reset on my self-OS ? ...just wondering if i could turn my brain into all zeros & start over. swear it would help me. willing to try ! ...guidance ?
Sometimes I think some of the posters here have their brains set to all zeros. Perhaps one of them might be able to help.
Super El Nino starting, boosted by the somewhat mysterious general rising in ocean temperatures (the details still need explaining, but the consequence is a stronger El nino. Next year will be the hottest ever recorded, with high reliability.
This isn't the same thing as the "arctic air mass disruption" effect that gives the NorthEast brutally cold winters right?
As for the sweltering summers, major cities should look into developing "district cooling" but on a more massive scale. They have massive AC ducts under the surface streets with vents similar to sewers scattered throughout. The reverse could be done in the dead of winters. Heating coils planted underneath sidewalks could superheat them to 120-150 degrees during blizzards and polar vortexes to prevent snow accumulation and help raise the ambient air temperature at street level. The UN should also begin working on those temperature equalization vacuum tubes that connect arctic and desert parts of the planet through the ground to help stabilize temperature extremes. Time to start making Earth more of a habitable life-suitable planet.
Alright hopefully people won't laugh at this suggestion, but it may be seriously one of humanities only hope at this point.
An Earth Distress Call beamed into space.
We simply do not have the medical or environmental tech to deal with all these problems on the planet at once. We need assistance from more advanced alien species out there if they exist. We should try to build the most powerful SETI radio transmitter known to man, launch it into high orbit, and have it continuously send out a compressed signal containing literally all the info about our planet and the societal distress plaguing it. We should send out all the visual and audio transmissions needed that would max out the likelihood that another intelligent civilization could decrypt and decipher the purpose of us sending all this. It could be a massive solar + nuclear powered Hubble style transceiver designed to operate continuously for years transmitting signals powerful enough to still be readable at the closest 100 star systems to Earth. We should basically send the entire Pentagon database, library of congress, all the detailed info about our DNA, computer systems, and exact detailed planetary data out into space to hopefully give all the aliens the info they need to come enhance our planet. It's time for humans leave the Earth in the hands of more civilized and accomplished species in the cosmos. We need to start making some noise in our galactic neighborhood, and project the desperate pleas of humanity into deep space so hopefully our interstellar neighbors will respond and help us.
Of course there's also no common sense way to realize that 70F is ideal. And why is the freezing point still a positive number?
You also just suggested that everyone "should just use Kelvin", which is just Centigrade with zero degrees set at a lower temperature.
