I am not sure what you mean by storybook romance. In real life I don't get out much or have opportunities to make or meet new friends. However I found a chess club 50 miles from my house and met a guy I enjoyed talking with. Then in the past few weeks I met 2 guys that I am becoming really good friends with. Before that I had no friends. I made some friends on chess.com and that was cool and significant to me. Because to me a friendship is important and meaningful regardless of whether it's in real life or not

Making friends is not something you do in a mechanical way. It's not like a lightswitch you can turn on/off whenever you want. When you write people and they reply to you, they are being friendly. That doesn't mean they want to be your friend. My advice is to stop forcing it. Life is not like a fairy tale.
Another piece of advice I can give you is to always stay on guard. This is the internet. There are a lot of fake accounts out there and also on this website including in your friendlist. People with bad intentions will try and scam/abuse/extort you in some way or another. If you make a friend online never share your personal details/don't send nudes/don't lend money under any circumstance, no matter the story.

Anyway, the best thing to do is act like the friend situation doesn't bother u. People appear too clingy/needy when they try too hard to cultivate friendships. Too much chatting online or texting can be interpreted the wrong way. So don't make a big deal over it.
