Years ago, when I was a teenager, I was riding a train and overheard a conversation. A Vietnam War veteran and a Korean War veteran ended up sitting next to each other and got to talking about their experience and swapping stories. I kept thinking I should get up and say something, but I didn’t want to interrupt their conversation of camaraderie. A few stops before mine, the Korean War vet stepped off the train, leaving the Vietnam vet on his own.
I finally got up the nerve to say something and I thanked the Vietnam vet for his service. He told me “you’re the first person to thank me for my service in 5 years.” Mind you I had been taught about how contentious the Vietnam War was in school, but this man’s first-hand account of being spat on and shouted at and bombarded with all manner of thrown objects was heart breaking. We had a long talk about the attitude toward troops and how far we’ve come yet their sacrifice so often goes unrecognized.
From that day on, I’ve gone out of my way to thank anyone I see in fatigues or sporting their veteran hats. I know it’s not much and it sometimes earns me strange looks, but based on the reactions I get from our men and women in service, I’m making a difference. Please know I appreciate your sacrifice.
Stand with our troops.
I’m standing with you as we stand for our troops.
