Language learning

I know this seems ridiculous to ask on a chess site, but I know there are quite a few people on here who are learning different languages. So, I have a question: Does anyone know a good and free language learning platform that they use to learn different languages? Duolingo seems like a good start, but I'm not entirely sure it has the details one needs to know in order to be actually accomplished in a language one wishes to learn. Thanks in advance!

I'm learning Japanese and I use multiple apps and books. Duolingo is good, but apparently you can't become fluent with it; so I have got some other apps, but they are only for Japanese use. I have some books, but they are also for Japanese use, so I won't recommend them either as I don't expect you want Japanese books. I also got a irl teacher, which has helped a lot. I think it helped me to scope through apps and books to find which worked best for others and which worked best for me. I'd suggest finding one that won't get so boring you quit learning. ☻

Well, I use YouTube as an immersion platform and lingq is quite good too

Hm… I haven’t really tried learning a language online, but duolingo definitely has the basix to be good at a language. When you have the basix down, you can move somewhere more advanced.

First, you can find Youtube videos for just about anything when it comes to language learning; it's an enormous cache of information.

And, while I do share your concerns that Duolingo is really not enough on its own, my experience has been that Duolingo is the best way to get started.

You can always turn to other resources, but Duolingo offers a solid base for beginners, and doesn't drown you in grammar.

I've used a lot of mediocre apps and websites over the years (I've never paid for any of them, so I'm speaking in the realm of free resources only), and the best really has been Duolingo.

What language are you hoping to learn?

If it's Spanish, I have a few websites devoted to Spanish I could recommend!

Whatever the case, I hope you have fun learning to speak a new language!

I'm hoping to learn quite a few languages, but since I'm almost done with Koine Greek, I want to move onto Spanish next because that seems to be a language spoken a lot. I would so appreciate your recommendations!

I do believe youtube is probably my best choice right now, since you guys mentioned it. I'm self taught and would like a teacher in real life, but since that can't happen, I think youtube is the second closest thing to that. I also know Great Courses has language learning too...

Ah, neat!

I expect Greek was very interesting to study.

I'm not sure if it would be compatible with your device, but I would first recommend this app- Learn Spanish.

It's very straightforward, you don't even have to bother with making an account or anything, and it has a lot of information presented in a simple, organized way, that can be accessed offline.

Studyspanish.com is a website I've used while starting out with Spanish. It's a great tool, but to be honest it got a little frustrating when a good deal of content was always held back for "Premium users". Nonetheless, it's got a good, academic format.

www.learnpracticalspanishonline.com , while being a little on the older side, is exactly what it claims to be, practical, and doesn't require an account either.

I've always been self taught too.

The hardest part is wondering if my prounounciation is anywhere close to correct. 😅

And I expect I might learn a good deal faster if I someone to practice with as well.

Yes, I can relate. I wish I had someone to practice Spanish with, but since I don't, I do the best I can with the accent 😅 And thank you for the websites happy.png

Duolingo is a great way to learn the basics, but there’s little to no way you’re being fluent just using that app.

Same here. 😂

No problem! I hope you may find them useful.

Even better is if you don’t even learn the language beforehand, just go😂

Platforms never help. U gotta get a in person tutor and go to the source. Learning japanese? Go to japan. Learning german? Go to germany. Imbibing in the culture really does help

Sadly, some of us don't have the money to just go. Or else I would.
