when i was in college (late 90's) led zep was pretty much my favorite band. looking back i still really love the music, but i have become much less tolerant of robert plant's voice. i still love some of the songs (real genius in there). nowadays i prefer stuff like jack johnson :)

I tink Jack Johnson is alright, but it seems to me like he has 3 songs and repeats them with different lyrics to make a lot of songs.

Led Zeppelin were unabashed rip-off artist. But, they stole from the best.

My favorite song of theirs, assuming that they actually wrote it, is Over the Hills and Far Away.

I've heard the theory that Led Zep were rip-offs and all, but I've never seen concrete proof about that, just lousy claims, maybe you can give us concrete examples or proofs?

Now by popular demand! A list of some of the songs Zep stole from other artists:
  • "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" - A folk song by Anne Bredon, this was originally credited as "traditional, arranged by Jimmy Page," then "words and music by Jimmy Page," and then, following legal action, "Bredon/Page/Plant."
  • "Black Mountain Side" - uncredited version of a traditional folk tune previously recorded by Bert Jansch.
  • "Bring It On Home" - the first section is an uncredited cover of the Willie Dixon tune (as performed by the imposter Sonny Boy Williamson).
  • "Communication Breakdown" - apparently derived from Eddie Cochran's "Nervous Breakdown."
  • "Custard Pie" - uncredited cover of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down," with lyrics from Sleepy John Estes's "Drop Down Daddy."
  • "Dazed And Confused" - uncredited cover of the Jake Holmes song (see The Above Ground Sound Of Jake Holmes).
  • "Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" - uncredited version of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down."
  • "How Many More Times" - Part one is an uncredited cover of the Howlin' Wolf song (available on numerous compilations). Part two is an uncredited cover of Albert King's "The Hunter."
  • "In My Time Of Dying" - uncredited cover of the traditional song (as heard on Bob Dylan's debut).
  • "The Lemon Song" - uncredited cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" - Wolf's publisher sued Zeppelin in the early 70s and settled out of court.
  • "Moby Dick" - written and first recorded by Sleepy John Estes under the title "The Girl I Love," and later covered by Bobby Parker.
  • "Nobody's Fault But Mine" - uncredited cover of the Blind Willie Johnson blues.
  • "Since I've Been Lovin' You" - lyrics are the same as Moby Grape's "Never," though the music isn't similar.
  • "Stairway To Heaven" - the main guitar line is apparently from "Taurus" by Spirit.
  • "White Summer" - uncredited cover of Davey Graham's "She Moved Through The Fair."
  • "Whole Lotta Love" - lyrics are from the Willie Dixon blues "You Need Love."

""Theory"... ROFLMAO"

Hey calm down dude, I never said you were lying, I was just saying tat every time I heard about this no proof were furnished.

So I see it's quite right, but I don't see the point in the video of Dazed and Confused as Jimmy Page could very well have composed it for the Yardbirds. They say the Yardbirds stole it from someone else, but then, why didn't they put the song?  Not saying that they didn't steal it, just a critic to the video...

One thing that might be worth watching is that Jimmy Page was a proficient studio guitarist and may have composed some of these "stolen" guitar parts in the first place, which of course could only account for a small minority of them. Anyways, thanks for the information hooper.

Did Led Zep ever say anything for their defense?

Jack Johnson?!

I have to agree with Etienne that many songs of his sound similar. I have to add something though. I hate what he has done with the guitar. The guitar is such a beautiful and amazing instrument capable of providing expression in so many unique ways, and he has turned it into a kind of percussion instrument in his music. There really is not much musical depth to his stuff at all, although I admit it is pretty relaxing (or would be if it didn't irk me so much).

DITTO-IMMIGRANT SONG IS GREAT-VERY STIRRING!

First of all, what jack johnson has done with the guitar is create his own (excellent) style of music. Of course his songs sound similar, because that is his style, he obviously doesn't play hard rock. But each of his songs is unique in its own way, has its own (excellently) made lyrics and makes immensely relaxing and GOOD music.

Second of all, led zeppelin. I only have 5 of their songs, and I absolutely love 4 of them. From this, I think they're a great band.

Third, richfeet is the smartest person here.

I've never heard a bad Led Zeppelin song .

7 years ago??  A bad Zeppelin song?  Battle of Evermore blows--not rock, Hats Off To Harper--someone put foam over the speakers--sux.

Thre's an article in Business Week, Zeppelin is being sued for Stairway To Heaven. The band Spirit claimes they wrote it and zeppelin stole it. This is the 5th time.

Dadg777

Spirit's song, Taurus, DOES sound very similiar to Stairway's beginning.

Taurus has a descending pattern instead of ascending like Stairway, but they sound very similar.

It's just extremely weird that a lawsuit is filed 40+ years later.

RonaldJosephCote

I'd like to be a fly on the wall for that lawsuit. Be interesting to see if the judge wants to see, not hear, any chord patterns.

The new CDs are out.  I'm not a fan of the ones that are basically the same just w/o the singing.

Bunny_Slippers_

I saw them in '75 at the Coliseum in Vancouver, the concert was very similar to the live album that came out later ("Song remains the same" I think). Took until the next day until I could hear properly again. On the way home I asked the bus driver 'how much' and I saw his lips move, but couldn't hear anything he said and I dumped all my change into the coin box and asked loudly for 2 transfers. The loudness crumpled the girl I took, she sank to the floor and sat there for the last half of the concert.

For albums, I recommend the first 4 albums; from "Houses of the Holy" on, the rest was pretty hit and miss at best. I think they just got bored and started putting out whatever crap they could think of, along with a few good songs.

Dadg777

Jimmy has stated that for Presence, he didn't have many ideas & couldn't get anyone else but Robert to contribute anything.  Writer's block was taking its toll.  It's the only album with nearly all songs credited to Page/Plant.

Good point, Dad.
