Money is like a drug. When you get a bunch, you get a huge rush but it doesn't last. Then you want more! And once you are immune to a certain level of the drug, any less just won't do.

Reminds me of a favourite book The Appeal (I think... So many John Grisham books, and such similar names Lol)
But this evil, rich, chemical company owner (certainly not associating rich and evil, just this guy was!) was being sued by this little tight knit family firm.
It's a sad story as the good guys lose and basically lose everything trying to fight this chemical company... But they remain together, happy, and hopeful. The evil dude wins, acquires tons more money, hits his goal of 7billion, and he's standing on his yacht alone when you get to the last line of the book which stuck with me forever! Maybe not word for word, but very similar to:
"Now that he finally had his seven billion dollars, he only had one thought on his mind. Eight."
