"In civility thou seem'st so empty" Shakespeare "As you Like it".
I sure can think of a certain person who would qualify for this quotation.
Any thoughts?
"You are not worth the dust which the rude wind blows in your face"
(King Lear). Another good quotation for some disagreeable poster?![]()
I'm not sure Shakespeare's writing could be called Medieval. Shakespeare lived during the Renaissance and his writing, while not modern, isn't Old or Middle English, but probably early Modern.
Compare Shakespeare's late16th century/early 17th century writing (Juliet speaking) to that of early 15th century Geoffrey Chaucer's (from the Canterbury Tales) writing and the difference is obvious:
Juliet:
How art thou out of breath, when thou hast breath
To say to me that thou art out of breath?
The excuse that thou dost make in this delay
Is longer than the tale thou dost excuse.
Is thy news good, or bad? answer to that;
Say either, and I'll stay the circumstance:
Let me be satisfied, is't good or bad?
Chaucer:
A shipman was ther, wonynge fer by weste;
For aught I woot, he was of Dertemouthe.
He rood upon a rounce, as he kouthe,
In a gowne of faldyng to the knee.
A daggere hangynge on a laas hadde he
Aboute his nekke, under his arm adoun.
