...(hey, Gomer, in reference to your post #32, though, you'd asked about if  Dolly and Loretta Lynn should be in the Country list----they are! Check out the original list at the top of this thread)...

I noticed that after I posted. I had forgotten Loretta was up there but assumed she should be there somewhere. I suppose a lot of this is a generational thing, especially for Country. The Country of my youth bears almost no resemblance to the Country I hear on the radio today. Likewise, a lot of today's country sounds like some '70s Rock. For example, this was considered Rock back in the day:

There has to be a slot for Roy Orbison somewhere in the rock or pop categories. If you haven't watched his "Black and White Night" video performance, I think you're missing out.

Yes, Roy Orbison! Talk about music royalty - how about the Traveling Wilburys (including Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, and Tom Petty)?

This is tough because a lot of artists are simple the best at what they do.  For example, you might like Elvis over Johny Cash but youll probably be able to recognize they they are best within their own rights.  Kind of like the arguments about Labron & Jordan.  Or Spielberg & Lucas.  You may favor one over the other but there’s no denying that both have worked hard to earn what they have.
But if you’re arguing over Michael Jackson vs Usher; Bill Cosbey or Richard P.   Then you might want to consider just how entertaining a pedo or cereal rapest is.

Hey, Swampy! Great lists, great posts! And the rest of you, too. I thank all of you again for all your input; this thread thrives because of YOU. In fact, Swampy's lists inspire me to suggest a further revision----maybe there should be Musical NOBILITY in addition to Musicsl Royalty...you kniw, like including a "Duke/Duchess" of a particular musical genre, along with the other noble peers like "Earl/Earless", "Baron/Baroness", "Marquis/Marquess", etc., etc...then deserving groups/individuals could be included in the musical mix, so as not to exckude the lists to just a royal few. I leave to all of your judgement as to whom should go where.

I wonder if alot of our friends from overseas are sleeping. I'm not sure of the time difference but sometimes when I get up in the morning they have commented on how quiet it has been without us Americans.    lol

It depends on your time zone here in the states, but Europe is somewhere around 5 to 8 hours later than us in the states.

I agree that Roy Orbison should have his own category and fill every Royalty slot. Whatever style he sang his voice was in its own category.

@OldSpooky The Outlaws song I chose was a little extreme just to make my point. To me, it feels like a hyped up bluegrass, once they got past the slow intro. There were a number of Rock bands in the '60s and '70s that had songs that would be considered Country today.

Roy Orbison was and remains a “One of a kind. Sadly, country music no longer exists. IMHO it’s mostly trashed up, over-hyped, and over produced. More power to those like it. But for me, just put on any song by The Voice; Vern Gosdin. BTW- i can easily switch from genre to genre, i just appreciate real music made by real artists, whether i like the style or not.

Flipping that Outlaws album over finds this guitar anthem that some feel rivals Free Bird. That might be a stretch but it always gets my feet moving.

I also switch genres a lot. My iPod is always on shuffle and sometimes comes up with some strange combinations. I've been surprised, shocked, sometimes even appalled for liking some of the stuff I like. It doesn't have to be good. It just needs that undefinable something, be it rhythm, tone, melody, beat, or some unique combination of all the above.

For an entirely different genre, check out R. Carlos Nakai. I have a deep affinity for Native American flute music. Always have, can’t explain it but it reaches the center of my soul like no other music.

Thank you RJC, thank you.

Hey RJC, as you’ve shown an affinity for jazz, check out Mr. Dan Balmer. Guitarist of jazz, fusion, and originality. My personal favorite. Hope you enjoy a taste of his music.

A full commitment's what I'm thinking of
You wouldn't get this from any other guy
I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
We've known each other for so long
Your heart's been aching, but you're too shy to say it (say it)
Inside, we both know what's been going on (going on)
We know the game and we're gonna play it
And if you ask me how I'm feeling
Don't tell me you're too blind to see

Maybe I’ll be the odd one here, but marching band music is another favorite genre of mine. John Philip Sousa, Karl L. King… I can hear the parade now…
