When the universe was formed, there were only 3 kind of atomic nucleuses , hydrogen, helium and lithium (though small in amount). Now helium is said to be the least reactive element. Among the three, only helium was strong enough to pull electrons and form atoms and in the earlier stages of the universe there used to be a lot of free protons out there. So actually if a helium atom collided with a slow moving proton, the proton could actually attach onto the helium and form helium hydride. This actually still exists in deep space and is one of the few helium molecules.
