It helps because the DNS override will trick the game into thinking their server, which allows you to join any server you'd like, is a partner server.
Also yes you have to keep them as long as you'd like to join custom servers. There are other methods as well like friending accounts "BCMain" or "BCMain1" which should then let you join their "local" game and do the same thing.
