if water has oxygen molecules in it, shouldn't fire burn more when water is splashed on it?
The reason water extinguishes fire is because it absorbs all the heat and blocks more oxygen from reaching the fire. If the water was as hot as the fire it wouldn't put out the fire very easily. Also, if a fire were hot enough, like 3000C, it could split water into hydrogen and oxygen, and the water would actually fuel the fire.
