Otto Preminger was directing the film "Hurry Sundown" in 1966. He wanted a theme song and hired composer Earl Robinson to come up with one. Robinson is known in the Pop/Rock genre for having written "Black and White" which was a 1972 hit for the Three Dog Night (though it was first recorded by Pete Seeger in 1959). Writing the music, Robinson teamed up with Edgar Yip Harburg who wrote the lyrics. Harburg was quite a successful lyricist, having written all the songs for the film, "Wizard of Oz" including the most famous, "Over the Rainbow." Curious enough, Peter, Paul and Mary had already recorded his tune, "Brother Can You Spare a Dime" on their 1966 "See What Tomorrow Brings" album.
This leads us into the original reason for all these words. After he was presented with the theme song, Preminger, for whatever reason, didn't use it in the film. That same year, however, Peter, Paul and Mary did use it on their eponymous "Peter, Paul and Mary Album."
"Hurry Sundown" is quite a beautiful song made even more beautiful by the group's angelic harmonies and unique vocal blend and is by far the best song on the album.
I love listening to covers, so I sought out various renditions of this song.
One I particularly like is an unexpected one by a Japanese group, Heart Stream:
Another credible cover is:
And a nice, though rather laid-back version:
None of the covers approach the original, but each one is certainly a valiant attempt.
