I would like Eric to realize how civil we are being during this debate. What none of you have realized is that this forum topic is the trial!
I can understand the reluctance to deal with the headache of moderating any sort of political or religious based forum. It's a royal pain and normally is kept out of subject based sites to allow the community to bond and share a common interest. Politics and religion tend to marginalize people rather than bring them together.
That being said you can check out the Guerrilla News Network. Their forums are normally hot:

When you argue religion, irreligion comes; if you argue politics, mudslinging comes. People who say they don't have religion really have a religion; people who say they have religion, don't have it (religion is action, not words). It's a paradox. Good to ban it: there are other sites for this. 
I don't know why you feel the need to discuss politics here, the must be a million sites to do so on the net. Why ruin a good chess site with something other than chess?

comments like this one are perfect examples of why we don't allow discussing religion. "if you don't believe in the same things i do then you are a ____________ (fill in the blank)". and then you get "you actually believe _________(fill in the blank)? then you must be a ____________ (fill in the blank)".

I'm never sure why topical sites like this one need to have political, religious or any other kinds of debates. Aren't we here to discuss chess? If I want political debate (which I have never found on a site like this - it is usually a slugfest between close-minded fear mongers), I go to POLITICAL sites.
