On reflection, BestSellingBeagle has it back to front about Antarctica: must be difficult to spend money there. There are shops, but their range of goods is very restricted and focuses on necessities plus some souvenirs for tourists.

There actually is an Argentinian military base on Antartica.

…I think I share Lola’s sentiments about that.

THX AG happy.png . always wondered why they dont put abuncha data centers on Anarctica. u have the air/liquid cooling, wind power, power from nearby countries, etc. anyone know ?

Logistics problems. (supply) Low return on investment.
Maintaining a lot of people in such remote locations.
I don't claim to know though.

WELL THEY SAY U CANT (OOPSIE no caps) go onto A. but whos gonna stop u ?? ...just go. nobody's gonna chase u down. i could hang out w/ some friends for like a month and eat ...nvm.

okay. so they capture u & take u to court. WHICH court ?? its int'l right ? ...theyll probly just tell u to go away & dont come back. but wouldnt it be FUN ? ...go party next to a cannon stove. and maybe even setup some internet access & a satellite tv...YEE ! go around the brazilian cape and then straight down the 30°. go by sailboat (im certified to sail up to 16 meters...12m single-handed). Off the top of my head (with a quick lookup for the exact years of the treaties/protocols):

- Antarctic Treaty (1959) which strictly forbids commercial, industrial, or military activity.

- Environmental Protocol (1991) which bans any activity causing environmental harm, including waste heat discharge or construction not related to science.

- Zero local governance or infrastructure: No zoning, police, power regulation, or emergency services to support private operations. Not even any ability to levy taxes to pay for any such services.

- No existing power grid.

- Wind power is unreliable under hurricane force winds, and ice and snow ruin turbines. Solar power would be all but non-existent 6 months of the year.

- Laying undersea cables is very expensive.

- Ambient cold is not just free cooling. Antarctic air is bone dry and has ice crystals in it, which is a nightmare for intake and exhaust.

- Heat dispersion would either melt ice, or be so expensive as to be pointless.

- Transport of supplies expensive

...and the #1 reason why Antartica would never be used for this...

- It's far cheaper to do this in Scandinavia, Siberia, Northern Canada, etc. But even there, the yields are not that much better, so again, not really worth the trouble.

Is that enough reasons?

not sure abt YOUR reasons ? ...but tell that to the McMurdo Station there. Their data center will be up & running by the end of the year. AND the Princess Elisabeth is currently powering theirs ? ...w/ renewable energy.

so...u may wanna check ur shoes for horse apples ? cuz not only did u step in it ? ...but ur way-way in the middle a no where.

I am sure their paychecks are direct deposited in a bank on the mainland. And they get to save all that money. As there are no stores or movie theaters to waste their money on.

Probably no casinos either.
Station boss: 'you're on that online casino/horseracing again!'
Weather researcher: 'Its okay. I've got withdrawal limits at the bank I use. Plus I didn't bring the password to my main accounts to Antarctica.'
Boss: 'Okay then. Here's $20. Put it on that C horse. I like him to win.'
'You're in.'

Maybe they bet on penguin races?

?

Avatar of playerafar

@varelse1
I'm sure they get internet there in those antarctic stations.
But maybe policy varies from station to station.
Maybe McMurdo you can bet on Santa Anita.
And at the british station maybe you can bet on Royal Ascot.
I don't know if there is a british station there. I'm guessing yes.
The Scandinavian stations? I don't know if they have horseracing in those countries.
Checked. They do. And they allow betting on it too.
Is that 'evolution'?

Avatar of varelse1

What about those guys in the ISS? Where do their paychecks go?

😆👽🛸

Avatar of playerafar

@varelse 1 (again)
I checked on penguins - definitely relevant to evolution!
They live naturally in Antarctica and a lot of islands.
Including near the equator in much warmer climates.
Like in the Galapagos islands. In the Pacific.
--------------
Regarding the biggest penguins some of them are near 100 pounds -
and can stay underwater for over 20 minutes and dive over 300 feet down.
Many world war I submarines couldn't go that deep!
(yes I know AI can be wrong)
Definitely some evolution there!

According to AI - ISS astronauts can and do get internet.
'remote desktop connection' for their laptops.
They can watch the news and even vote from space.
They can do internet banking.
Apparently movies are watched from a library though. Saving bandwidth.
Can they gamble? Do day trading?
Probably some good jokes from there.
happy

when we went to miami last time we couldnt u/s why there was pennies laying on the streets. seems like no one wanted them. not sure why. AI is guessing like $30 million a year.

and s/t/e that makes us giggle ? ...is ppl who pay for salt. we went to publix miami and all those weird salts were on the shelf. how can a/o tell the diff ??

People working in Antarctica are probably very well paid.
And their employer is taking care of their food and housing needs and paying the bills.
But - you probably have to be very professionally educated or near the top of your trade -
to work there or be there.
And to be there you probably have to work there.
I can think of possible exceptions.

Those science facilities are in no way comparable to a commercial datacenter. A large datacenter is 100 times more power draw than McMurdo Station, for example. The planned upgrade will still likely be 1MW at best, not hundreds of MW.

Now please, you do this every time...double down and get schooled. Take a break.
