The State of the Forums or Down the Rabbit Hole

To me the 'weakness' is the...emphasis of fluff by the powers that be (ahem...POG,
I pretty much agree with this 1000%.
Though in addition to their emphasis on fluff, I'd add the site's abandonment of serious content and the administrators' aloofness and detachment.

One pill makes you larger; another pill makes you small.

I have had my issues with the forums for years. Obviously i will not mentions names, but one person on staff agrees with me. But as they have said. Their is nothing they can do since it is not their site.

The forums have always been kind of strange, so I do not go there. Mostly I look at articles or blog posts.
Batgirl is the exception; her forum posts always have substance. My gratitude to her for expanding my chess culture!

I have been considering canceling my membership and just doing the free thing. The whole site doesn’t appear very well curated, forums are a mess, the articles appear dated and just odd in general and the streaming varies greatly from ‘pretty damn good’, to ‘hey I’m drunk tonight, think anyone will notice?’ (Don’t get me started on the techno music causing 90s flashbacks).

I just posted in a bunch of those crap threads. LOL
They're at least mildly interesting, right?

Techno music?
Referring to the streamers, a fair percentage play techno music while they play (I’m old so maybe it’s called something else now, it’s that fast beat electronic music).

EDM (Electronic Dance Music) but yeah

From my perspective, the forums used to be much better, and definitely has the potential to return to high utility and enjoyment.
I'm a Responsible Free Speech Constitutional Conservative, and I lay a significant amount of the forum problems at the feet of poor (usually Leftist, Liberal, or Woke) moderators.
Hypocrisy and uneven enforcement of rules is typical (but not always) of political liberals.
I have offered to be a moderator for chess.com, but I would do so from the discipline of a free speech Constitutional Conservative. Honestly, I think I would clean it up tremendously.
Being that Chess.com is headquartered and based in San Francisco, I very much doubt that I would be offered the position of forum moderator.

I disagree. While they had been declining, mostly due to the influx of juveniles, they were still viable as long as a certain standards continued being exerted. The difference now is that there is no standard other than the religious and narrow adherence to the "no cheating discussion" rule with the mindless, non-discriminatory auto-mods handling the rest.

Not sure there is a correlation between moderating a chess forum and politics. But as card carrying Marx-Engels Lefty Pinko, I would point out more great chess players have been on my team than yours .

I do sincerely appreciate your self-awareness, and truth-in-labeling.

You hit the nail on the head Batgirl!
Of course being a forum mod on the site is like being a life-guard standing on a beach trying to stop a tsunami.
