Time travel

http://gnabgib.blogspot.com/2005/07/is-time-travel-possible-honest-answer.htmlFascinating blog you have there. I remember Einstein's theories in college physics days, a long time ago. The problem is we can't built spaceships that can travel very close to the speed of light. And if we can build them, no man can withstand that kind of speed (the mass becomes large).
Going back to the original topic, I think I'll go back before 1941 (before the bombing of Pearl Harbor) and talk to General Douglas McArthur (stationed in the Philippines) to warn him of Japan's intentions. Perhaps more lives would have been saved.
Hi Akiko, nice little blog about time travel you have. My interest in time travel is purely theoretical. Finding out what things people would do, how they would change the past but not realising the consequences of their actions is just so interesting. You mention in yor blog that physics denies that time travel to the past is a no no. But I can prove that time travel to the past and the future is very much going on today. All you have to do is get on a plane and travel east or west for 2000 miles or more and you have gone into the future or the past depending on which direction you are traviling! Now you may disagree with my idea of time travel but unless we can 'define' exactly what 'time' is?
Theoretically speaking, time travel to the past could be done by using a Tippler cylinder. Tell me what you think.
Hi Charlie91, you mention that if we could go near the speed of light no person could withstand that kind of speed because the mass becomes large. This is a relative concept. If we could accelerate at 1g, in two years we would approch the speed of light. Now the person on board would not feel any different. Everything on the ship to him would appear normal. but to someone observing from the Earth, say, would see a difference, like length contraction, mass increase etc. But I digress from the topic, sorry.

Red, I guess you're right; we're delving into the theoretical, and I guess anything is possible. On the practical point of view, if time travel is possible (I don't believe it's a fact), then we could have direct evidence now, but we don't have any. Or like some hollywood movies, maybe such time-travellers are in our mental institutions. Maybe such 'insane' people actually came from the future or past... Or perhaps the many UFO sightings actually represent a future earth technology, and humans are onboard? Your forum topic makes you think these things.
Like Defacto, I don't see the benefit of making NAB; drinkers are drinking for the alcohol, not the taste.
Good point. I was livid that time I accidentally bought St. Pauli Girl N.A. Let me know when you are going. I'm down for that beatdown.
Hi Elwood, whilst I agree with you that going back in time and killing someone would be a bad idea, your variable theory is incorrect. Lets say that we could go back in time and just look at what happens as,say, Hitler grows up. We already know how things turned out. The fact that we observe, unobserved, makes no difference to the out come of his life. He does not grow up to become anything other than what he became. We know this from historic fact and time travel made no difference. So we go back in time and kill him we could not be killing an innocent because we know how thing would have turned out had we not killed him.
If, on the other hand, you're talking about the many worlds theory from QM...
You have assumed that Hitler was somehow evil incarnate! Where some people might claim that it would be permissible to murder a tyrannical dictator, very few would claim that killing an innocent baby would be permissible. Even if you could prove that this child was destined to become a genocidal dictator, to kill it would still be killing an innocent baby. The baby will be subject to very many environmental factors before becoming anyone worth killing (if there is such a thing).
Also, quantum mechanics is a scientific discipline. There is much in this field that cannot currently be empirically verified, so there is plenty of theorizing taking place to fill in the gaps. This does not mean that these theories now belong to science. The many worlds theory, and many other related theories that have been discussed since long before the introduction of quantum mechanics, falls squarely within the realm of philosophy.
First, don't yell at me; I am thinking.
Second, this is all terribly incoherent.
"If we changed all our bad stuff, we would all be the same."
Is a Mexican any more or less perfect than a Russian? If we were to become perfect, we could all still be individually so.
"If all our questions were answered, questions would no longer exist."
If all our questions were answered, would they not be replaced by more questions? If the universe is infinite, which is wholly conceivable, then knowledge must also be so.
"If we knew everything, the only point of our existence would be to make technology."
In no way does this follow. God knows everything. He does not just sit around "making" technology. Even if you don't accept the existence of God, this is still in no way convincing. Ultimate knowledge does not necessarily lead to technology. Ultimate knowledge could just as easily lead to a simple way of life.
"Technology leads to war."
History tells us the opposite. The more advanced civilizations have become, the more peaceful they have become.
"War does not sound good."
This sounds about right to me, although earlier posts argued that WWII may have been worth it.

Sorry mate but no such thing was assumed here. I don't even know why you would say that. As for killing an innocent baby, we could start a whole new topic on that one. But this topic is for peoples thoughts on where they would go and what would they do IF they could travel through time.

Nor is it a religious debate, so please do not bring god into it.

Everything falls in the realm of philosophy. ![]()

You got it.
It was now when I wrote that last post, but now it is then, so that is irrefutable proof that I traveled from then to now through time.
I'm amazing!
Has anyone ever read THE END OF ETERNITY by Issac Assimov?
This book takes place in the FAR DISTANT future where time travel has not only been perfected, but there is a whole governing body controlling it. The people are called "Eternals" not because they live forever, but because they appear in many different centuries looking exactly the same, thus creating the illusion of immortality. They live in a space outside of time called "Eternity." Their jobs all focus on evaluating various times and places, and making changes that will alter history (presumeably for the greater good). They're always looking for the MNC (minimum neccesary change) that will invoke the change they desire with a minimum of side effects. One of the rules, however, is that no one is allowed to travel back before the advent of time travel, because that could possibly bring about the end of "Eternity". GREAT BOOK! I highly recommend it to anyone interested in perspectives on time travel.
