Unwanted downloads/upgrades

I hope there are some Windows 7 experts here.

I'm connecting via a slow connection, on my cellphone.

For the past 3 days something is trying to upgrade or download in the background.

Now my problem is this, it affects my already slow connection, and it also eats up my data. My monthly data budget is about 1 GIG, data here is expensive, I cannot afford unwanted stuff. At the moment it's using about 30 megs per hour, which is about my daily allowance.

Acrobat Reader used to do that, I'm pretty certain I managed to get rid of that.

I'm also pretty certain that Windows 7 auto updates are disabled.

Is there any way I can see what this is, and stop it?

On the pc do a cntrl-alt-del and run process manager and see what is using all your resources may be a start...you might get a clue what is running in the background..firewall like Norton or something?

Is there a coffee shop somewhere with free wi-fi like a Starbucks or something over there?

It's nothing in the Task manager.

This is my desktop pc, i cant go lugging that around, lol. Strangely, the only wifi within 25 km is at our own take-ot place in town, been going for about a month.

(Starbucks in South Africa? I don't think there is one anywhere. and from what I've read coffee is about $7, I can't imagine anybody here paying that for coffee)

Is there no way I can block programs from using my internet without my express permission?

A third party firwall like Avast or..can't remember the name of the good/free one i used to use.  Anyway, i would try that.  You may have to turn off the windows firewall.  I know that Avast will automatically let anything already installed through if it is a trusted thing, so you may have to go in manually and figure out which one it is.  But it should list everyhting that is accessing the internet.  Zonealarm...that is the other one that i have used.

Thank you.

But whatever it was seems done now, I've been on for 70 minutes, only 4 megs this time :)
