Them the only plausible answer to this question , and one that I think fits perfectly, is that some terrestrial animal landed on earth, and laid an egg which started the whole process off.

Okay, snarkiest aside. The Bible folks will probably say the chicken. Scientists will probably say the egg eventually came from something that slimed its way out of the primordial ooze. Me? I’m just happy they both are so tasty.
