What is harder, chess or checkers

I play both and they are just different.  Same board but other than that.  Both are difficult and games for life.    You can study checkers for your whole life just like chess and never know it all.   I know I play GMs in checkers regularly many of whom play chess also and they tell me this.

It is just a different game.   And a game of skill.  :-)

(Checkers also has Grandmasters.  Just in case you weren’t aware of this)

TL;DR

Found this to be an interesting point, from Mr. Black Death himself:

"Checkers is a less attractive game, infinitely less, but much more scientific. Look, a less good move in draughts is irreparable and has immediate drastic consequences. However, with chess one can still return and change the position of the pieces and possibly even win." - Joseph Henry Blackburne

It is true.  Checkers is much more unforgiving.  Even a bad positional move can lose a game with a good player.     I agree with Joseph but it is just a different game and I hear chess players frequently denigrate checkers who have never actually pursued it and their view is usually one of ignorance.

The thing that fascinates me is how annoyed some chess players are with respect to checkers.  I don’t see it for GO or Shogi or other games.  They leave all their venom for checkers.  It is a different game and deserves respect as do the people who choose to play it.   Many of whom play chess also.

How many forums are there here dismissing these others as a simple game.    None.

Someone told me it is because we use the same board.  (For 8x8 checkers anyway)

I play both of these games.  They are both difficult just different.

Can you play Brazilian Checkers.  I’ve played it a little.  Very much like POOL which is played a lot in the USA and Russian.  Just a slightly different rule for kinging.   Brazilian follows the same rules as international 10x10.  Never be embarrassed to be a checker player.  Anyone who can play both games is doubly talented.

I certainly would say chess is FAR more complex and more difficult: you have both a far greater number of variables, and a greater variety.

Yes.  I’d say people making these comments have never played checkers either as it is a view taken from little knowledge.  If any.

No, chess is way harder because there are much less positions in checkers, and much less possible moves making chess objectively harder.

And you’d know of course.  Even though you don’t play checkers!!

i play checkers, i play chess, and i honestly think chess is much harder than checkers.

Where do you play checkers and which variant?   Are you any good?

I know many players who play both games well.  Some choose to play checkers in preference to chess and say it is more difficult.  And they are very good at both.  I think they are just different.  Require different thinking.
Some look at checkers being easier to learn initially or can beat their grand mothers and extrapolate that to the whole game.  I have encyclopedias of checkers and do tactics for both games.  Both are very challenging and very different.  Just because the same board is used don’t assume similarities.

There are more moves and more positions and lots of lines and plenty of options in chess than in checkers so chess is much harder.

Jeez I thought bumping a four year old thread was bad enough. , but bumping a ten year old thread ! 🙀

If your going to set a game of checkers vs chess, it's like putting the martial artist into a boxing, where martial artist is forced to go for a rule of boxing. Which is something that will deter its full capacity to spar because even if he wants to launch his kick, he can't do it. For checkers though, chess pieces will just place themselves in an opposite color to avoid the threats of the checker pieces. So it is really not a good idea to compare it that way.

If you want to judge checkers just because chess has far more complex rules, why don't you (chess players) play a checkers (draughts) against a highly skilled checker player then see if you can win against him.

You can win at chess because you're very good at it. But judging checkers won't make you a expert in playing it.

I suggest you guys to challenge a game against a master of draughts then see if you can win.

I for one, even if I'm an enthusiast of playing chess, is also interested in playing checkers. The variation of checkers I'm interested to play with is the International Draughts played in a 10x10 checkered board.

I'm used to reading chess books, and is also interested in learning the strategy of checkers. I'm attempting to learn reading the move notations associated with draughts.

And if talking “simple” games vs chess then how about othello? 😉
