What is Nothing?(Serious Question)

What is nothing? No, SERIOUSLY, what IS nothing? Nothing is nothing,but what is nothing? If you don't understand, let me give an example: Let's suppose there was no earth, no plants, no life, no colors, no things, etc. Therefore, there would be nothing. Right? But what would be nothing? Nothing is nothing, but what is NOTHING? Here's another one: Since in math, a negative number times a negative number equals a positive number. So the same rule would apply to nothing times nothing equals SOMETHING. But what exactly is nothing, and to make matters more complicated, what is SOMETHING? One more: Close your eyes. What do you see? The typical reply would be nothing. But you also see black when you close your eyes. And black is a color, thus meaning it is something, so we come back to the initial question: What exactly is nothing? This was a discussion me and my friend had, which stumped everyone we asked, and no one could answer it.
