Well it depends... maybe they invented that saying a while before the first spacecraft was created, and by the time we reached the moon the saying had stuck.

The original idiom was "The sky is the limit as long as you don't wear a space suit.", but that was long and impractical, so it evolved during the 15th century to it's modern form.
