Some of the things that people have written in these forums require anonimity. If people in their lives knew the kind of things they said, they'd have to hide out with Casey Anthony.
why hide

Because then people could look up my USCF rating history and see that I update the rating shown on my profile regularly and conclude that I have no life.

It seems to me that Facebook is a giant billboard showing exactly why people should worry about using real identities in a worldwide network where the vast majority of users are unknown to one another.

Who uses their real name on internet message boards? The trouble with posting on the internet is you will inevitably unintentionally piss someone off. Do you really want them to know your real name?

as long as you don't have meant anything bad. if people wants to misunderstand soemone, they will l inevitably misunderstand you in real life.
"Aim from the heart. Some will love and some will curse you" quote: Bon Jovi
if people get pissed off at something written in a message board I guess they need help. and those people get more fuel since people who hide can add 2 % extra if they choose to be a provocateur.
but I noticed some people over-interpret everything you write in here and I guess you are right but for me it is to late.

People do get pissed off at what they read on an internet message board. I know from personal experience. If you've been on the internet for any length of time, someone will eventually dislike something you say. And if you're lucky it won't be some psychopath who makes it their mission to go after you. Better safe than sorry, I say. Maybe it's because I used to work in law enforcement and realize that there are a lot of crazies out there.

As long as people quote Bon Jovi, anonymity is a must
and his real name is John Francis Bongiovi, Jr ... go figure ...
Pretty ironic!

...let's see... use your real name...address...date of birth...etc.
...I know of at least 3 friends of mine with enough "computer worms" to use such basic info, and be able to obtain other more critical data such as your Social Insurance Numbers etc....then we just manufacture credit cards, and go shopping on your dime...
...or maybe the next great "serial killer" is out there searching for his next victim...good luck on "pissing him off"...I hope you guys are useing "peer blocking" when on the net (this prevents your IP address from being identified...
why hide behind a fake pseudonym on a chess site.
it is not a dating site so why hide behind a fake username / strange name.
I don't go to a OTB tournament calling me Conan the Baberian and trying to protect my idendity or place where I live.
facebook has shown that we can make social network without strange nicknames or pseudonyms.
