You got a hold on me... really.

I would think nearly everybody knows Smokey Robinson's "You Really Got a Hold on Me."

In case someone doesn't:

This song has been covered up and down and all around by professionals and amateurs alike.

My favorite cover has always been the Beatles'. In fact I like their version better than the original and many other covers are in their style.

Here's the Zombies version. Most people will recognize their "Time of the Season,"  "Tell Her No,"and "She's Not There."  The Zombies strike me as an underrated group.

There must be hundreds of covers. I've listened to a lot of them and tried to pick out both the good and the unusual.

Here is Cher with Gregg Allman:

and Rod Stewart:

My guess is that most people are unfamiliar with the name Laura Nyro but more familiar with songs she has written that were made famous by others, such as:  "And When I Die,"  "Wedding Bell Blues,"  "Stoney End," "Sweet Blindness",  "Stone Soul Picnic," and  "Eli's Coming." My favorite Nyro song is "California Shoeshine Boys."

Laura had a remarkably soulful voice and here's her cover:

But there are unknowns who've made covers, some just sitting in  their bedroom or living room, some with a more interest in details. I'll just lay down a handful below:

This someone names Allison Young. It may be one of my favorites:

This is Monica Rocha. I don't know who that is with her but he's good.

This one is listed as Madi Sipes & The Painted Blue but it's pretty much just Madi. I like her.

I have no idea who James C. Lyons might be and he may not be the best but his cover is credible:

Jessica Paige is different. Hers is more karaoke but her voice and style is notable

This one just made me smile... a lovely couple, Tom Fletcher and wife with Tom playing on a little pink ukulele.  It's actually pretty good, but more important, it's fun.

Which is your favorite?

They’ve come up now.

All good, but got to go with madi. Something about her voice. And the fact she’s a fellow ginger in no way swayed my vote!
batgirl

She is good and unique.

This is one of the only songs that I like the cover better than the original; I too really like the Beatles cover of the song. Funny, because I'm more into Motown than rock.

Thinking about it, the Beatles are the only rock band that I really like.

introuble2

beautiful song!

CounterproductiveHam

I think the beatles usually mess the covers up, my personal preference(I.e. Some BH and CB songs). Looks good!

batgirl

The Beatles did some amazing covers.

Lawdoginator

This is not really a Beatles type of song. However, the Beatles did great covers of Twist and Shout as well as Please Mr. Postman.

I like the Beatles. when I was growing up they were my favourite band. Dad made me listen to them!lol. But I have to say I’m more of a kinks fan now. Ray Davies was just on the edge of sanity I think
Gomer_Pyle

Where would American music be without all the great hits from Motown? I first heard the Beatles version so that's been my favorite. I seem to remember a version by a female artist that I couldn't find. However I did find this decent version by Mickey Gilley that I don't think I've ever heard before.

autobunny

Sorry to digress but it reminded the bunny of the "got a hold on you" lyric in

More digressions with Christine McVie

autobunny

Christine again but in Fleetwood Mac.  This time only two words match.

autobunny

These were in the early 80s when the bunny was so much younger. And dumber - if that were even possible. Sorry for the memory dump.

Although Im an old head , I didn't realize there were so many versions . My favorite is Smokey , but a real close second is the Beatles , because as a kid I used to watch their cartoon! LOL! great post.

Thanks for the memories.
