Conditional Moves

This feature is pretty controversial. I like using it but find it annoying when an opponent uses it against me. Any thoughts?

it's a time saver. shouldn't be annoying. they anticipate, and then it speeds up the game.

I think it's annoying also and the only time I use it is if I'm a few moves away from checkmate.

"Your move triggered a conditional move - it's your move again!"

Kinda find that irritating especially when my opponent uses a long line.

I use it on forced moves against players who use the full compliment of time (i.e. 4.7 days out of 5 days per move). If it is a forcing move, then I figure I might as well start his clock again right off since it will be 4.7 days before he/she moves again. Plus, they usually make another move right off so it speeds the game up

Of course, most of them have 200+ games going, so I am certainly not complaining about the time they take.

This was the case, BTW, with my best win game.

I love conditional moves, speeds up the game :). The only thing which someone can find annoying about it is the fact that your opponent actually anticipated your moves, while you didn't expected that! Because if you did expect it you don't want to wait days/weeks to slowly set the next moves to possible finish or come to a game where the next move is uncertain.

I must say that i dont find them annoying, if you use them they save time, but you use them at your own risk. Its a CHOICE, not a COMPULSION to use them.

If your opponent uses them, good for them thats there choice, you can use it to your advantage by predicting what conditional move they may have already used.

Its similar to "Premoves" in live chess, in a bullet game they come in very handy for time, however your opponent may be able to catch you out by predicting a premove.

All in all, both are a choice we have not a compulsion, they are a service put in place by chess.com, if they werent here, there would be far more complaints as to why the option is not there:)

I've never thought of conditional moves as being anything but a convenience.  I've certainly never thought ill of an opponent who used them - on the contrary, I find it a great way to speed up the game.  Like Dana said, the only way I've been annoyed is when their conditional move shows they were anticipating my response!

Conditional moves were commonplace in the days of postal chess. You told your opponent what move you would make if he did what you anticipated. Especially in the opening, this saved time and postage. I'm sure that the conditional moves on this website are intended in the same vein. I don't find it annoying at all.

Maybe a premium members feature could be to disable CM in their settings if it bugs them. I'm new here so haven't used yet but don't think I would mind at all :)

Nice feature suggestion. Would like to be able to disable conditional moves by non-premium members.

Avatar of CoachConradAllison

I don't think that is a nice feature suggestion. It is quite mean for non-premiums.

I use them alot...I never even imaged that people would have any objection, and I am still having a hard time understanding what is annoying about it...if you are not ready to move, you are not REQUIRED to move right away just because someone used a conditional.

It saves so much time!

Conditional moves are completely optional, therefore I have no objections with them. As mentioned, they do save a lot of time, especially when there are many games being played (the highest I've seen is ~75 ongoing games), and when the next few moves are obvious.

What difference does it make if someone uses conditional moves against you?  It's not like you're forced to move; your clock is reset.  There's no reason to disable them for premium members.

Conditional moves are convenient, and fun. I like them. If I use them, it is a fun ego-rub to demonstrate to my opponent that I predicted his line of moves, and if my opponent uses them, then marvelous for them, and for me it is no problem and allows the game to proceed more readily.

Please leave them be, Chess.com :)

If your opponent forces you into mate and the time controls are 7 days per move, it would speed it up to use conditional moves as all moves are forced
