for staff, a must read

You're right, they're completely different.

One requires 1/2 of a one semester course in programming and the other multiple degrees (software engineering, statistics, etc).

So if you're garbage at the baby-level one...

How about people review what they're quoting with a little more care: as much as it may originally be from someone else - however they managed to circumvent the autofiltering - by quoting it you are perpetuating and propagating it, so that's on you.

Auto-unmuting does happen. Your first mute is auto-unmuted after something like 24 hours. The increment increases with each subsequent mute.

The auto filter looks at the text and doesn't do anything about pictures. So one can actually post some horrific stuff and it's reliant on the mods to see it and action it. It will generally result in instant closure, though. There was a war a few years ago when a repeat offender kept coming back with new accounts to post gay porn. The mods outlasted him and he went away eventually.

So many dumb takes in the one thread.

thanks for your input, but, you are untrustworthy. you were part of the problem when you were staff. yeah, i remember you deciding to bow out of conversations instead of fixing things, so, your "many dumb takes" rings hollow.

as far as your review process...

get bent.

or, describe how that "review process" would go. person a writes something that passes. person b quotes it and is muted. in what way is there a review?!? think about what you wrote. we are supposed to somehow determine that words already posted might result in a mute if we quote a post.

you fail.

again.

paper_llama

You want to talk automation...

How about every time a new page is started (i.e. every 20 posts) an average is taken. If the average number of words per post is fewer than the average number of words in a single sentence (google says about 15 words), then the topic is flagged for review. If a topic accumulates 3 flags it's auto-locked. There could be multiple ways to get flagged.

So topics like this where 12 year olds go to chat would not exist anymore:

Make shipsss

---

Even better, auto flag accounts when a certain percentage of moves fall into a certain width of time bin... for example I've found accounts with over 60% of their moves happening after 5 seconds. Well guess what? That's a cheater. You do auto analysis and give achievements and etc after every game, so you can't complain about computing power.

There seems to be a program that consistently gets around 80% CAPS. Morons cheat with it for 20 games then switch to unrated and are never banned... I'd like to pretend chess.com focuses mostly on money events like Titled Tuesday, but after the Niemann shenanigans we all know that chess.com invites cheaters back again, and again, (and in Niemann's case again for a 3rd time).

---

But there is 1 thing chess.com does take seriously, and that's making money... so... good for them I suppose.

Hi I'm new here

Ilampozhil25

#44, and so wouldnt this:

www.chess.com/forum/view/more-puzzles/shortest-proof-game-challenge

and we (the approx. 6 people who regularly post there) would be extremely mad if that thread got closed

just saying, false positives and false negatives exist with every such mechanism

AlCzervik

another example of the fail.

I probably wasn't clear about the nature of "flagged"

By flagged I mean from the outside nothing changes, users don't notice a thing... but mods get an alert to click that will take them to the topic. If it's not a garbage topic then they can check a box that gives it a pass. Easy.

paper_llama

Of course writing the code wouldn't be easy... not if you can't even make spell check work. It'd probably be a 1 year project costing half a million dollars in payroll... so ok, they don't do it.

Maybe better to pay a few mods?

But see, this isn't the real chess community, so they don't care. 10 thousand kids spamming emojis in Twitch chat are what they can show investors (I suppose) so who cares if the forums are rotting.

Festerthetester

C.C definitely has $$ as a motive but that's what businesses do unfortunately. I have no idea what drives them to add emojis and up and down arrows in a forum environment with so many real problems. Maybe they have kids running the projects too.

Festerthetester

C.C has always claimed the ban against religion and politics here was because it would create undue arguments and the forums are searchable online. Yet it's okay to see endless posts about 'be my friend' or 'I'm fluid how about you'.

I guess it's acceptable to talk about sexual orientation, or lack of it, among kids but adults can't talk about real life. Maybe they intentionally want this to stay a romper room so they can claim to be 'kid friendly'.

I have yet to find a game site of any kind, or even a social media chat site, that isn't dominated by children and creeps.

Thankfully we have clubs here where adults (usually) can have meaningful (?) fights about...........nothing.

undo

undue

Festerthetester

Thank you. Corrected.

I undid undo and gave it the spelling that was due.

AlCzervik

well, here i am, back after about a one week mute for quoting this:

i was muted due to the highlighted word. even though the above post passed through the bots.

ugh. what's worse was that the bot sent me this:

Hello AlCzervik

I'm sorry to say that your Chess.‌com account has been muted because we have determined it to be in violation of our Terms and Conditions found here: https://www.chess.com/legal/community

Your ability to chat publicly is now restricted for 1 year.

We would like to offer you the chance to re-enable your communication privileges if you can respond to us and acknowledge the terms that you have violated.

after eight days, sebastian from staff unmuted me. he was apologetic and kind, and even gave me a 15 day diamond membership. i'd like to gift that to someone else that would use it, if i could, because, obviously, i do not study chess.

this post is why staff needs to read this topic and make adjustments.

this is the second time in two months i've been muted for simply quoting another. previously when muted for this, i've been told i must not continue to curse, even though i didn't. another fine job by staff.

adding insult to incompetence is being told i was muted for a year. for what? being a recidivist quoter? it appears to me this happened for one of two reasons. one might be the poor leadership that allows the ai to make purgatory more severe based on the number of times one quotes someone that wrote a banned word. the second would be that cc is pi$$ed off that i write topics like this.

paper_llama

Oh, so it escalates.

The nice thing about making lots of new accounts is the auto-mute only gets me for 24 hours.

Sorry to hear about your treatment... this is a good way to lose long time members. Unfortunately, with a new horde of 12 year olds, I doubt they care.

AlCzervik

funny you mentioning that, because when i was muted-for a year-i thought of all your accounts!

and, maybe i should do that...

Ah, that conversation where you refused to accept any points that contradicted the insults you were throwing at Chess.com? I think that was about the demise of V2 and the introduction of V3, if I recall correctly. Yeah, I pretty much gave up trying to help you see how unreasonable you were being or how useless complaining in the forums was, since the mods and support staff who are present hereabouts have zero input into what actually gets fixed or what gets prioritised by the developers. Or indeed get any support to take stronger action against the trolls and the recidivists: if they did, I doubt that you'd still be here.

On the plus side, I'm actually looking forward to the next time you get muted for quoting something outside the ToS - it will be hilarious. I wonder if the auto-mute will be for more than a year? In any case you will probably need to contact staff - yet again - to get unmuted earlier; no doubt your high dudgeon will know no bounds, and the Support folks will meekly apologise and unmute you and let you back in while secretly delighting in your discomfiture. Small pleasures, I guess grin.png

For mine, the site is better off without them - they generate far too much whining compared to any benefits they bring.

Beggars can't be choosers. CEOs (successful ones) tend to have a beggar mindset... they (act as if they) need all the money they can get.

If Erik wanted to start an exclusive club where only people he liked were members that'd be easy enough, but it wouldn't generate money... running a compay isn't about accumulating fans.

How about accepting the point that muting someone for something they didn't write while having no filter for others is a dysfunctional system.

NO! you do not recall correctly. you bowed out of two topics that were just like this-pointing out staff fails. that you were a part of the failures and you now hold a grudge, wishing me a longer mute, tells all about you. you were part of the probem, and you continue to be with comments like this-wishing for long mutes for members that simply want the site to function.

and, you have the gargantuan balls to hope i'm muted for quoting. nice to see you care for site funcionality. do you see the sarcasm font? it's beside the finger.

what is "I'm actually looking forward to the next time you get muted for quoting something outside the ToS"? maybe i should report you for harrasment.

other members will note that we are not onlne friends here. yet, you, a former staff member, posted quickly after i was unmuted. gee, why the concern?

you can get bent about your hate for me. i point out site fails. you refused to respond in topics like this because you had no answer for why staff was doing what they did.

now, i'm not going to block you, because i feel that people should be allowed to show who they are. you are allowed to put foot in mouth, as you have, and show your hate. it tells people who you are.

i bet your parents are proud.
