No bad words allowed to friends/adults on this site in private messages/game chat lol? I was coaching people for free and they might say something like “oh sh**, I didn’t see that” and then they get muted and we don’t even remember them saying that bc it’s nbd haha. Then I get muted for a week for a bad word in a dm to an adult student I’m coaching for free. If it offends them they don’t have to have free coaching they can block me but y’all’s pc policeman bot didn’t even let it go thru. Naughty words weren’t even on the policy y’all sent so I don’t even know what’s fair game anymore. You guys let obvious cheaters slide so I dont really get it. Is Da** it ok? H E double hockey sticks ok? I’m not Mickey Mouse you guys. I understand there are kids on this site but y’all are going way overboard. I didn’t really like getting put in timeout when I was a diamond member so I cancelled my membership. Oh hamburgers!

chess.com doesn't allow certain things including swearing in the public areas of the site such as public forums. Private chess.com clubs and messages allow a little more. You can Google chess.com terms of service if you want, but personally I think it is fine. I understand why chess.com would have the site rules they do and so I have no problems following those rules.

Not too long ago, a student of mine engaged in mutual trash talking with her opponent, it was funny not being able to message her.

I've never liked this about this site. Honestly, I cuss like a sailor and I got muted once for it and couldn't believe it. You know as long as you're not swearing at anybody or degrading or insulting then I don't think it's really a problem as long as you're using it as a form of expression or emphasis. But rules are rules I suppose. And the unfortunate thing about writing is it's difficult for some people to correctly convey context in the written form.

Ya I get public forums and minors but friends/ adults in private messages or game chat is ridiculous. Are we at church camp? Rules are rules but if I can’t talk how I want and I’m not harassing anybody I might be done with this site. Y’all are nuts for banning a paying diamond member with a bot without even being reported. I don’t see anything about words on the policy or terms maybe I’m missing something. Trying to be a g rated version of myself gives me indigestion. U gotta keep in mind these are ppl I’m coaching for free they can block me if they get offended. My advice would be to take a look at how Xbox live handles it with “this message may contain offensive language” and then you get the option to report. I don’t even know what I can say on here anymore. Is this site run by Mormons?

With all the 502, crashes, annoying messaging codes, game disconnects, lag, lost points, and more things I can list, I just wanted to say “thank-you, thank-you very much”.

The problem is that a large portion of the time when filtered text is used, it's being done in an abusive manner. The site doesn't ask for ages and most people don't enjoy receiving abusive texts but may still want to keep their social features on.

i know you can be creative with how you use your words

Oh ya like 500 rated players require a IM to teach them

I thought this place was chess.com, not chess kids. We should be allowed to choose what type of rabbit hole we go down to have a bit of banter & a laugh.

Then if you are the type of person who can't take all that type of fun you don't have to follow us down that hole.

You can't get no fairer than that.

You simply dont have the positional, tactical and planning knowledge to coach anybody

The site is 13+ but I would guess the vast majority of members don't want to see questionable chat and the site doesn't want people to receive it either.

See mods I should IMO be allowed to tell this guy to F off in a private message. I wouldn’t post it publicly. This is my whole point

I used this website for 8+ years now and I would say that it hasn’t really been a major issue for me - of course I am not suggesting a ‘one size fits all’ methodology, it would be nice for a settings feature which disables/enables the use of profanity.

Some people just try to get under ur skin and it worked on me once and I got muted for a day whatever. I kinda get that one. That was a few months ago and then the next bad word wasn’t harassing and muted for a week. So now I’m assuming if there’s one more it’s a month of muted? Waay overboard esp for a paying member on a 13+ site. I’ve also had a few people I give tips to muted after we played and we have no idea why. Maybe Elon musk will buy chess.com and fix this

As I said, it would be good if people were given a choice though. so if we can handle jokes & a bit of name calling it would only be us down there cracking the jokes & knocking each others play.

A lot of us don't mind a laugh & can take a joke.

The thing is, if someone wants to keep social features open, they don't get a choice not to see abusive language if the site allowed it to happen.  One member's desire to see or dish out something that could be considered abusive does not override another member's desire to not deal with it.

Theoretically the site could have a setting to disable filters on income chats/messages, but that's probably unlikely and wouldn't allow carte blanche to say whatever is wanted anyway. Also, live chats can be seen by spectators as well, so that's not a good fix for that area.
