Puzzles seem to be severely broken

I understand what you're saying but it really is egregious:

As previously mentioned, the ratings being shown may or may not be close to the one being used in the puzzle selection or rating algorithm. The whole puzzle database has been re-rated, the system uses that new value, but the UI isn't yet showing that yet

However, even if that wasn't the case, a 40% pass rate means it's relatively close to where it should be. Maybe 200-250 might be a little more accurate (and it's possible that's how it's rated on the backend).

Martin, you've been saying for months now that an update is on the way to fix puzzle ratings. In the meantime, there have been multiple updates spanning various functionalities with no puzzle rating display fix in sight. I've even seen puzzle UI changes at least thrice now. How hard could it possibly be to update the data displayed in app???

Other than Puzzle Points, which had been in progress for a long time, and the new Difficulty setting, which was happened quickly, I don't think there have been very many other UI related changes.
The back-end re-rating of puzzles has been going on for a while but using that data is a relatively recent change as well. The UI couldn't be updated to reflect that until after that was all ready. I can't say how long for sure that will take though. There's a lot of other work that developers work on as well.

Why have chess puzzles suddenly become absurdly easy? Have shot up to 2800 rating but the puzzles are nowhere as difficult as just a couple of weeks ago when I struggled to pass 2400

There's a new Difficulty setting. Change it to Hard or Extra Hard.

I'm a retired programmer. This is code for "it's not important to us".

It means that projects have priorities and there are limitations on developer resources.

You do know how you are coming across right? Not a great advertisement for the site. Maybe reread the moderator guidelines.

Nothing I've posted is against any guidelines. 🤔

The Martin-esque aura of flippancy lives on... quite strongly, too, I see. Just off the top of my head, 1) A setting was added to have the coach give you hints for puzzles, 2) That setting was recently removed (on Android at least), 3) A new setting for hard, medium, easy, etc (also not on Android), 4) New animation artifacts within puzzles. I am certain there have been more over the past few months alone, all within puzzles, all during the "puzzle re-rating on the backed" littany of excuses.

I forgot about puzzle goals, since I turned that off early on after it was released. That was part of the overall coach feature set I believe. Not sure about it being on the Android app. edit: found out this was temporarily removed from the apps, or at least for some portion of members

The new difficulty setting works on the app puzzles and I believe they'll be updated to include the setting as well.

The graphical artifacts you mention are all part of the chess board code; unless you mean the puzzle points feature and that's been in progress for a while, being released on the apps initially.

But as mentioned, there are a lot of projects, with different priorities, and limited developer resources. happy

The new setting impacts the app Puzzle selection algorithm as well. So, until the apps have the settings available to change, you'll need to change it on web.

New player here- climbed to 2600 in 5 days and have been given only 2 puzzles higher than 2150 difficulty. This has to be broken. Frustrating - I don't want inflated rating, I want the challenge

Have you changed your Difficulty setting?

Avatar of KJ155

Not sure how to quote from the app, but yes - I had been doing puzzles, then I changed the difficulty to be 1-800 on custom puzzles to show some to my son. I thought maybe that broke something, so I've since changed my custom puzzles to being 1800-2600, but that didn't seem to fix anything

I see you referencing some sort of difficulty rating, but I don't see a setting for that on the android app outside of custom puzzles, so that's not a setting I changed. Suddenly I just have an 85+% success rate on puzzles and it won't give me difficult ones. Surely it's a bug

The setting is only available on web currently and should be available on the apps in the near future. However, the change does impact the apps
