Should Chess.com Change How Vacation Works?

Lets compromise.

Lets have games and tournaments with vacation.  And games, and tournaments without vacation.

Oh wait...we already have that.

I think that it would be good if when you are creating a challenge you are able to specify that it is a "no vacation" game. That way users who dislike it when their opponents take vacation time have the option to not not play games with this feature.

It is a feature of the site, created by them, so it isn't something that is out of the spirit of a Daily games on Chess.com and consequently, not abuse. There are times when it can be abuse but in and of itself, isn't (by the rules and conditions of the site)

Sure, it is a 'feature'... but that does not mean it is fair. It's like going to a local chess club and saying I am a 'premium member'...and you are not 'premium' or a guest...so our rules are that  I get 5 minutes with a 3 second delay and you get 5 seconds with no delay.

Both are unfair...even if you call it a 'feature' of being a certain class of member.

The many people who have said that the amount of vacation allowed is *way* too high are absolutely correct! It should be capped at a lower total.

And its even worse that paying more money gets your vacation time built up and/or recharged faster, and paying more also increases the cap on the total that can be accumulated.

Cornfed's example is exactly right, that it is unfair to get more time in a game than your opponent by paying money.

I say this even while admitting that the main reason that I bought a premium membership was to get the automatic time-out protection, in case I am ever accidentally unable to log in and start the vacation myself.

I try not to abuse vacation time, like by extending losing games, but did use some this past week, for example. Because the seasonal holidays and also a beginning-of-year inventory count put our factory production behind schedule, I then spent more time at work than usual and was either too tired to think clearly or busy keeping up with home maintenance when I did get home from work...

Wow. I  glad I don't play Daily Chess.

I have experienced that members had suppdenly no electricity or wifi or were victims of a nature catastrophe and had an accident ..........

automatic vacation makes very sense to me and should stay!! It is anyway only for the paying members and they pay for this advantage.

Come on that is bad. There are many people like me who like traveling and travel a lot. So like I lose a lot on time. Vacation is very important

I agree

Here are some thoughts I have, including some that were inspired by great suggestions from our users!

1) If you sign on to Chess.com, you are no longer "on vacation". This prevents vacation abuse.
2) Auto-vacation should at the very least be optional, if not done away with; some premium users do NOT want auto-vacation, and would rather have the option to "time out" unimportant games if busy.
3) I think people really do have a bit too much vacation time.  And, I don't think it should scale with payment!

So what is the final decision?

I'm not so sure.  Chess, especially C.C. or Daily Chess, for many people involves deep analysis - in fact, for many, that's their joy in such a medium.   Someone truly on vacation may have plenty of opportunity to log into chess.com for a variety of reasons, none of which involves making a move they haven't been able to study... because they're on vacation.

Very important suggestion for 1st point:

Vacation should not immediately end within login, there must be a daily maximum amount of time you can spend on the site while you are on vacation. I may have 50 daily games waiting for me to move for example, I have a small free time (say 20 minutes while I am waiting for the plane to take off) and I want to play blitz in that free time of mine. How can I play blitz if my vacation ends suddenly within my login? I will not be able to play blitz in that scenario because my daily games will time-out but I can not spend that little time of mine for my daily games, I am just going to play casual blitz.

Makes sense for me. I hope you will consider it.

Disagree with number 1. I may have many other reasons for logging in, for example my admin works, very short time for solving a few tactic problems or ...

I think limitation on vacation is enough, NO limitation on login when you are on vacation.

aBhinav_147

Why do you put your games on vacation? Is it not to tell that you cannot connect to the net and want extra time??

aBhinav_147

Then what is the use to enable it when you can play your daily games?

It means that for any personal reason I have not enough time for thinking on my daily games.

ok

Usually I have at least more than 20 daily games in progress and I ponder on my every move on my daily games. Sometimes I am just busy and can not spend time pondering on my daily games, I just come to the site and play puzzle rush or play blitz or solve tactics in my little time. That is why I go to vacation

jk_2017

Tournament admins should be able to set a maximum available vacation days per player, throughout the whole tournament, that is independent of the amount of vacation time a player has on his account. Then it is just a responsibility of the players to watch the tournament settings before joining the tournament. You don't like players using too much vacation time? Choose your tournaments more carefully. You don't like there is limited amount of vacation time available for this tournament? Same to you, choose different tournament. Easy fix.

Andrea

When I am sick or too much busy, I go on vacation .

nevertheless chess.com is also a social media which means I am online, writing with friends and keep my clubs alive. This is much easier than to concentrate on my matches which I deeply analyse and need a clear mind for it.

So when I suffer from flu , I am not able to make good chess moves. Therefore log on chess.com should not end my vacation , specially not because single members abuse this function.
